Learners need to already be able to evaluate expressions for a given value of a variable. We will do a few in written form before moving on to the spreadsheet. In the class session, learners will spend most of their time working hands-on with spreadsheet formulas. I will demonstrate some spreadsheet skills as well and will use slides to post problems and examples, and as a background whiteboard-type work. Before class, learners will receive a link to a new empty Google Sheet. During class this sheet will be viewable and editable without logging in to Google Sheets, so learners should not share the link with anyone. (Learners are allowed to choose to use a different program, like Excel or LibreOffice, but they will be responsible for figuring out anything that varies between programs.)

Google Sheets is a web-based spreadsheet program. I will provide a link to a blank sheet within my account, so learners do not need to set up an account or provide any of their personal information to use it. This will also allow me to view their work and help with troubleshooting. However, if an offline solution is preferred, learners may choose to use spreadsheet programs on their own computer, like Microsoft Excel, LibreOffice Calc, or OpenOffice Calc.
Explain Everything is a shared whiteboard, similar to Google Jamboard but more flexible. Learners do not need an account and can access the board to write on it through a link. Learners who do not specifically want to write on the board don’t need to access Explain Everything at all – I will share the screen in Zoom and they can watch.

Something to write on and something to write with will be useful when we do a few simple problems by hand. Any option the learner is comfortable with should work, such as pencil and paper, whiteboard and marker, etc.
