Experiencia de clase

As a former member of a Marine Corps Sniper Team, I spent many months in forests, deserts, and unpredictable environments. The military survival instruction I received was critical to my success. And I want to share that knowledge with you!

This course is geared towards 8-13 year-old students (though the content is appropriate for students of all ages). All students are welcome to attend!

This 15-week course will include instruction in fieldcraft (forest/desert survival), urban survival, and overall situational awareness.

The format of this course will be lecture, photographs, diagrams, and demonstrations--as well as discussion. I will engage students by soliciting their experiences and by presenting "what if" scenarios for their consideration.

During this course of study students will learn to master the following areas:

FOURTH SEMESTER TOPICS:--- You can do the semesters in any order or concurrently if you wish. (See Syllabus for further detail)

Week 1- Deadly Sea Creatures
Week 2- Mushrooms
Week 3- Solar Still
Week 4- Situational Awareness
Week 5- Bow and Arrow Project
Week 6- Cordage
Week 7- Scenario Deserted Island
Week 8- Hidden
Week 9- Nuclear Disasters
Week 10- Natural Disasters
Week 11- Project Class
Week 12- Black Widows and Healing Plants
Week 13- Survival Kit
Week 14- Swamp Survival
Week 15- Scenario Finale Class

For this course, no prior experience or knowledge is required. My goal is for students to be empowered to overcome any obstacle or situation they may face in the wilderness.

My teaching style is casual, humorous, friendly, positive, and socially neutral. I understand students come from many various backgrounds. I want the students in my class to be prepared to survive and thrive if things go bad--or if they experience a difficult situation. I want to share my experience and training with them so they can take care of themselves and their loved ones. With the know how presented in this class, they will be able to do so.

Students will be encouraged to ask questions or seek clarification at any point during the instruction. Such interaction is the best way for this specialized knowledge to be understood and absorbed.

I solicit friendly participation from all students and have found that even the most stand-offish students eventually join in the weekly conversations with enthusiasm.

I allow time during and after class for student questions. If I go over the allowed time, no problem.

Lección 1:
Deadly Sea Creatures
Deadly creatures abound in the ocean. However, several stand out as exceptionally deadly—do not mess with these creatures! Make sure you can identify them and how to treat the symptoms if stung.

Lección 2:
Mushrooms as Survival Food
Mushrooms are an important survival food. In fact, you can survive on mushrooms, alone, for a very long time. However, some mushrooms are toxic to humans. We will identify and examine many easy-to-remember mushrooms that are highly nutritious as well as several that are deadly.

Lección 3:
Solar Still Water
We need water to survive. If you are unable to find a drinkable water source you will need to get creative—fast. A solar still is not easy to build but if you can find the right materials it will provide enough drinking water to survive and get out of the woods. We will look at the technical aspects of a solar still and how to build one that works well for you.

Lección 4:
Situational Awareness
Your ability to perceive and understand what is going on around you is critical to any survival situation. Not only that, you must be ready to respond to your surroundings. This class will show you how to “know” what is going on around you and how to respond or act accordingly.

Orientación para padres
This class will deal with potentially scary topics such as wilderness scenarios, disasters, and being lost. However, graphic or gory images, over-the-top illustrations, and/or detailed specifics will not be part of the curriculum. We will be discussing ways to start fires with tools and without tools as a class discussion. We will not actually physically start a fire but parents may want to talk with their student after this class regarding safety. We are also discussing water treatment and will emphasize seeking parent help should they wish to try the technique to purify water. I will always send the student to the parent for supervision in areas where safety is a concern. It is recommended that students should complete projects with parental supervision and not forage on their own. Parents should be aware we will discuss topics related to wilderness survival and that I will present all of these topics in as positive a manner as possible and in the spirit of survival...and overcoming obstacles.
Lista de útiles escolares
A pencil and paper may be helpful to take notes in class. I do send out a handout after each class with information that we covered. A supply list will be emailed prior to the first class meeting.
Recursos externos
Los estudiantes no necesitarán utilizar ninguna aplicación o sitio web más allá de las herramientas estándar de Outschool.
Fuentes
Sources used will come from information learned in the military during survival training and combat readiness courses as well as personal experience.

I am a proud, former member of a United States Marine Corps Sniper Team, Second Battalion, Third Marine Division, stationed out of KMCAS, Hawaii. I received extensive training in the military. I attended training such as: jungle survival, cold weather, desert survival and as a combat medic and EMT for that team. I served during the Gulf Wars and have extensive experience in the areas I teach. After my time with the Marines, I entered civilian Law Enforcement in Jacksonville Florida. Today, I share the knowledge I was given with others.
