Experiencia de clase

Hi Friends!

Welcome to Ukulele Karate! Get ready to learn some ukulele basics, sing while you play--and have fun doing it!
This class is designed to get students making music right away while learning fundamental skills for playing the ukulele.

Students will submit to me a video to me for each "belt" that is their best effort. If they earn one belt, they can move on to the next challenge! It's a huge motivator if you can find little yarn skeins in different colors to tie around the ukulele's neck each time the student successfully earns each belt. I have put a link to some that work really well in the class materials section below.

Each week, students will receive an instructional video in the classroom that will explain the week's assignment. The videos will build on knowledge that was learned from the previous week. There will be portions of the videos that are explanation and demonstration, and portions for practice and checking for understanding. I follow the "I do, we do, you do" model for music learning. First, I'll show you. Then we'll do it together. Finally, you do it on your own. The videos, along with the printable curriculum content I provide, will be the basis for how teaching occurs for the student. If a student needs to ask questions, or needs help, they are directed to post in the classroom, or message me. Videos posted to me in a message are helpful, as it's easier for me to diagnose a technical issue in a student's playing. I genuinely love music and learning so much and am really excited to help students, so please ask for help! Students can watch the video as many times as they need.

Since this is a flexible schedule class, and *there are no live meetings* it is assumed that students are motivated to learn and practice on their own without too much encouragement from me (although I will certainly be encouraging students to practice!)

Please note that some weeks will certainly be more difficult than others. Necessary practice time may vary because of this factor. However, generally, the expectation for practice outside of class is about an hour per week. That time could happen all at once, or it could happen broken up into intervals throughout the week (recommended).

Videos will vary in length as well. For example, the first video will be significantly longer than the rest to give proper introduction to the teacher, and to the instrument.

***To reiterate, there are NO live meetings in this class.***

I look forward to learning with you!!

9 Lecciones
más de 9 semanas
Lección 1:
Introduction
Parts of the Ukulele, how to hold, tuning, My Dog Has Fleas
Lección 2:
The White Belt: "Lime in the Coconut"
Using the song "Lime in the Coconut", students will alternate between two different strumming patterns as they eventually learn to sing and strum the whole song simultaneously. This song involves only one chord, the C7 chord.
Lección 3:
The Yellow Belt: Rest Subtraction
In this lesson, students will learn two new chords. They will use a tool/technique I call "rest subtraction"to gain proficiency in switching between the two chords.
Lección 4:
The Orange Belt: Folk Song Challenge
Now that the student can switch between two chords, we will put them in context when we learn to play "Row, Row, Row Your Boat".

Hello! I am a professional music educator and farmer living in Maine with my wife and three small children in the forest. After a long span of touring as a professional musician, I most recently spent several years as a music teacher in a diverse urban public school before transitioning my teaching online due to circumstances surrounding the pandemic. I now teach remote music classes exclusively, right here on Outschool! I am thrilled to serve students in a larger online network, through active and creative music education.

In nearly all of my general music classes, I help students cultivate or deepen fundamental musical skills that I believe we all need: perceiving and keeping the beat, moving meaningfully to music, and singing various song forms. Additionally, I expose my students to a wide range of culture through an authentic and diverse repertoire, including traditional, folk, and modern music from America and throughout the globe. Another critical component of my classes is active music-making with voice, percussion, and instrumentals. My classes range from learning construction vocabulary through song for preschoolers, to digital music production for savvy teenagers, to advanced improvisation for music scholars.

I am also an experienced composer and performer. I often take songs requested by students and transcribe the music so we can learn it together; I love a good transcription challenge. And, if I can't find a song that meets the needs or interests of my students, I'll write one for them! Classes, too!

I look forward to learning with you.
