This book study gives all teens the opportunity to read "New Kid" a Newbery Award-winning graphic novel by Jerry Craft and analyze and respond to it critically using a variety of strategies including discussion, graphic organizers, and creative writing and expression. The high interest low reading level graphic format of this book gives students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other reading and writing challenges the opportunity to use high level thinking and respond to an accessible text.

"New Kid" is based on the real life experiences of the author and his sons. This graphic novel students the opportunity to discuss issues related to race and class by reflecting on a book that is humorous but also challenging as it reveals the characters' struggles with the preconceptions of others, bullying, and racism.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
This class is designed to support students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning disabilities with a low reading level book. Students can use graphic organizers, create videos, or draw to respond to class posts and videos.
Orientación para padres
This award winning graphic novel is based on the experiences of the author and his sons as African American students in New York private schools. As such "New Kid" discusses topics such as unconscious bias, bullying, and systemic racism. The book has been banned in several school districts because it addresses these topics. I believe that the reality inspired experiences that the author shares throughout the book are valid and that students will gain valuable lessons in empathy and awareness of unconscious bias from reading this book. Preconceptions and stereotypes are addressed in a factual way that involves all characters. Many characters become aware of their biases and begin to change the way that they view others.
