Learning to read first starts with learning the alphabetic "code". This code means that each written letter represents a letter sound, and once we crack this code, we are ready to start reading! This class specifically targets the skills needed for reading, but in a fun way. All of the activities will be easy to use at home.

This class welcomes children with some, little or no alphabetic knowledge. This means it would be suitable for a young learner who is just starting their reading journey. It would also be suitable for a child who has already started learning to read, but is having difficulty and would benefit from reviewing foundational skills. For example, children who are having difficulty remember corresponding letter sounds, rhyming, or cannot identify the first sound in a spoken word.

The scope and sequence for each class has been carefully chosen, from simpler to more challenging letter sounds. We will begin to blend and build words as we go, using the code we have already learned.

Along with the letter sounds, children will also be taught correct letter formation to print the corresponding grapheme.

Lessons will include explicit instruction and review of letter sounds and letter formation as well as games and activities to practice their skills.

How it works:

This is a self-paced class which means there are NO LIVE lessons.

Each lesson will include 2 videos with activities to follow to be completed on your own schedule.

The syllabus outlines the scope and sequence of what will be covered across each of the five lessons. There will be a lot of review and repetition, as this is important for retention of phonetic knowledge and skills. The activities listed is when they will be first introduced, but you will see them repeated throughout. Eg. mnemonic letter cards will be used in each video.

Students will be encouraged to share photos or videos of their work in the classroom for feedback. I welcome questions from parents along the way. I'm always happy to provide support if your child is having difficulty with a lesson or activity.

The self-paced class format allows you to work at your own pace and review lessons whenever needed. If your child for example is having difficulty with blending 2 letter sounds, take time to build that skill before moving to blending 3 sounds.

Metas de aprendizaje

Programa de estudios

5 Lecciones
más de 5 semanas
Lección 1:
Letters i, s, m, f, p & Mnemonic Letter Cards
This week I will introduce the letters i, s, m, f and p using mnemonic letter cards. I will also ask learners to go on a letter sound hunt around the house, demonstrate a letter sound memory game and how to print letters.
Lección 2:
Letters t, c, a, b, h, j & Blending Two Sounds
This week I will introduce the letters t, c, a, b, h and j and review last week's letter sounds using picture letter cards for support. I will demonstrate blending two sounds together and how we can segment words into individual sounds using arm tapping or a fidget popper. We will add to our memory game with new letters this week.
Lección 3:
Letters n, g, l, o, d, e & Segmenting Words
This week I will introduce the letters n, g, l, o, d and e and review all previous letter sounds and how to print them. I will demonstrate how we can practice blending two sounds using a toy car, and how we can map the sounds in a word using loose parts such as blocks, beads, buttons, etc. I will also share an auditory activity where we try to identify which word doesn't belong using first sound fluency.
Lección 4:
Letters u, k, r, y, z & Blending Three Sounds
This week we will add u, k, r, y and z and review all previous letter sounds. Students will be given a segmenting letter sort game to play as well as a race track letter sound game for practice. I will demonstrate how to blend three sounds together.
