Tarea
1 hora por semana. After each class learners will be given a packet of practice problems that directly relate to the lesson taught. This homework should take approximately 30 minutes to 1 hour. I will have videos that explain in detail each homework problem!
Evaluación
Learners submit each homework packet before I provide the 'answers' video. I will provide written feedback for each homework assignment. There will also be a final optional assessment for your student.

💯 If you have made it this far you must be interested in having your student learn ratios and proportions in ways that make sense and generate understanding that goes above and beyond what is taught in a typical middle school classroom! The connections and patterns taught in this self-paced class are so important. They connect ratios to previous understanding (equivalent fractions) and to future understanding (linear equations). This class is taught in four 15-20 minute videos along with three extra videos that clearly model and work out the homework.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
During the four weeks your student will be taught the following important ("Major Work" for 6th & 7th grade) standards.

Math Common Core Standards Met:
6.RP.A Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems
-- 6.RP.A.1 Understand the concept of ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities
-- 6.RP.A.2 Understand the concept of a unit rate
-- 6.RP.A.3 Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of
equivalent ratios and double number line diagrams
7.RP.A Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems
-- 7.RP.A.1 Compute unit rates associated with ratios of fractions
-- 7.RP.A.2 Recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities
-- 7.RP.A.2.B Identify the constant of proportionality (unit rate) in tables, graphs, diagrams, and verbal descriptions of proportional relationships.

I present tasks in a clear way and begin every lesson with a visual and concrete example. This ensures that students work with a real-world scenario to begin their learning. I also provide students with a daily organizer so that they can follow along with what is presented. This organizer becomes a set of notes that will help them understand and complete the homework.

In Summary:

👏 This class includes four videos (12-25 minutes each) where I teach via a slide deck and 'mini-movies' that illustrate topics.

👏 This class includes three extra videos where I go over each week's homework. I am very careful to model thinking that will help your student make important connections!

👏 Each class's slide deck includes me talking in a small video window, or recordings of me at a whiteboard, so that students can really see my emotion and meaning.

👏 Students have a class organizer for each class to write information down as it is learned.

👏 Each class is as engaging as possible given the pre-recorded format! I spend time each class discussing patterns and sense-making strategies that help learners engage deeply with the content and questions. These same strategies are used in the homework assignments so that they 'stick!'

Lección 1:
Understanding Ratio Tables
Students learn about ratio tables as we generate and use the concrete diagram model to find equivalent ratios with cups of water and spoonfuls of purple drink mix powder. We also spend time discussing why some versions of drink mixes are NOT equivalent ratios. I also reinforce the ratio values by showing batches (the original ratio as a drawing/diagram) as we find more and more equivalent ratios.

Lección 2:
Connecting Ratio Tables to Double Number Lines and Proportionality Constants
We begin a new discussion of equivalent ratios by analyzing a group of red & white gummy bears and watching as they are separated into smaller and smaller proportional groups. We record all of our data into a ratio table and then learn about double number lines. We spend the second half of class looking at the patterns in the table and double number line and how the same patterns appear in different yet related ways. Analyzing these representations leads to finding a constant of proportionality.

Lección 3:
Finding and Applying Unit Rates given Any Ratio
This class analyzes running and eating donuts IN THE SAME RACE! Fun right? We use data from this race to complete ratio tables and have an in-depth discussion of equivalent ratios and all of the patterns available to find equivalent ratios and unit rates. During this class we cover reciprocals and how they are part of each unit rate for ANY ratio. Students are given a graphic organizer that enables them to see the patterns and ask the right questions to determine if their thinking is accurate.

Lección 4:
Tying it All Together with Graphing and Writing Equations
This video will review all of the important connections that occur within ratio tables, double number lines, proportions and graphs of equivalent ratios. And while graphing our set of equivalent ratios we discover that to write a linear equation we just need to use the constant of proportionality. This idea is what leads DIRECTLY to linear equations!

Otros detalles

Orientación para padres
There is no scary class content unless the idea of eating donuts and then running five kilometers upsets you!
Requisitos previos
Students should be familiar with multiplication and division and understand that the two operations "undo" each other.
Lista de útiles escolares
Learner should have a paper, pencil and each class's printouts before beginning each class. For the third class a ruler or straight edge will be helpful.

I have taught ratios to students for decades. I have seen the struggles and I have thought about how best to overcome common misconceptions and challenges. I believe that these lessons provide all of the connections, sense-making and ideas necessary to succeed in ALL middle school grades when learning ratios, unit rates and proportions.
