In this flexible schedule class, students will read through the first book of the Hunger Games series. We will discuss the creative, English-based concepts aligned with the story which include the following: main and supporting characters, setting, plot, creative writing, figurative language, and author's purpose. This class is designed to take place over eight weeks, however you may choose to move faster or slower depending on your reading pace. Prior to each lesson the student will read (on average) three chapters of the story. Some weeks require more reading and some require less. As we move through the story, we will look for lessons learned throughout the story that we can apply to the real world. Suzanne Collins, the author, wrote the Hunger Games series as a way to discuss higher concepts with adolescents. The setting of the series takes place in the United States, but far in the future when the country of Panem exists instead. The story discusses different geographical locations of each district, and makes allusions to the Appalachian mountains, lowlands, Rockies, and other places as well. Students will create their own Hunger Games story by designing their own tributes and arenas. After creating their arena and tributes, they will write their own short story to determine a winner, and practice the figurative language concepts that they discover throughout the story. They will also choose a character to create a profile of as their story unfolds.

I am currently a research fellow, earning my PhD in education at the University of Oklahoma. The specialty of my research is to arm students with skills and knowledge to transition from school and into adulthood - no matter what age, it is never too early or too late! I also serve as a military reservist, Lieutenant in the US Coast Guard.
I earned my associate degree in child psychology, then my bachelor of science in education from Liberty University, and then my master of science in special education from Johns Hopkins University.
I teach classes that are based on real-life experience and literature. If a student can connect a concept to an experience, then they are engaging in valuable learning!
For example, my one on one tutoring sessions typically involve the interest of a student (ex. cooking), and my lesson will be constructed around famous chefs/ bakers from history, utilizing math and science skills, even marketing, business, and finance, as these play a role in a career or hobby surrounding cooking.
Please message me with any specific concerns or requests for your child, and let's get started!
