This African American studies course is designed to develop an understanding of the causes, character, and consequences of the African American experience and its influence on the world, the United States, and the African American community. Beginning with a historical, geographical, social, political, economic, and cultural understanding of the African continent, the course will provide a descriptive and corrective overview which will introduce the student to the study of the African and African American experiences. Why start here? Most Eurocentric curricula begin African American history with their enslavement, completely leaving out the rich cultural history many Africans had in their own societies. By teaching students about history pre-slavery, you build a deeper respect and self-confidence in black children who learn this early. Here is the week by week breakdown 1 Ancient Africa, Geography, Ancient Egypt, West Africa, Kingdoms 2 African Explorations of the World 3 More African Kingdoms 4 Enslavement in the Americas 5 Neo-slavery; abolition, Civil Rights and constitutional rights 6 The soul of African Americans 7 Being Black in STEM 8 Current state of African Americans (The Black Revolution) and Project Submission This class is structured to promote engagement, curiosity, and creative thinking among learners. Video-based lessons will use slides, videos, and lectures to interact with our learners. Interactive Learning During Flex Classes: Communication with the mentor and among fellow students is a critical component of Flex Based Courses . Participation in online discussions involves two distinct activities: an initial response to a discussion question and at least two subsequent comments on classmates' responses. Meaningful participation is relevant to the content, adds value, and advances the discussion. Comments such as "I agree" and "ditto" are not considered value-adding participation. Therefore, when you agree or disagree with a classmate, the reading, or your teacher, state and support your agreement or disagreement. Responses and comments should be properly proofread and edited, professional, and respectful. My teaching style is very laid back, but I also like to encourage learners to participate and have high expectations of treating each other with respect. Students do not need any previous experience to take this class.
Metas de aprendizaje
Upon completion of the course, the students will:
• Gain an appreciation of the richness, diversity, and contributions of African American culture to national and international life and the world.
• Reaffirm the fact that civilization in the United States is not the result of the work and energy of one people, but is the result of the contributions of African Americans and many other groups.
