Students will quickly learn and review the about 30 of the 70 basic phonograms, listen and retell engaging stories, spell words from their component sounds, syllables; then read the words they have written. They will create their own spelling journal pages from templates provided, including with reference charts and word lists spelled and marked for the spelling rules and phonograms to aid in memory. They will begin to read from these words.

NOTE: Please do not enroll if you are unable to print the templates. This is required.

Spelling rules related to sounding out basic words will be taught by building reference charts.

Students will learn to "think to spell" some words when pronunciation and spelling do not match. Finally, they will play games occasionally to review the phonograms and practicing gluing the sounds together in words.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will be able to
1. Say and write correctly about half of the basic phonograms; be familiar with the others
2. Break words into syllables
3. Sound out words syllable by syllable, sound by sound
4. Recognize the five types of silent final E
5. Recognize the five spellings of the "er" sound
6. Pronounce silent letter phonograms such as igh, eigh, ough, kn, gn, and ui
7. Identify words where single letter vowel phonograms say their name (three reasons)
8. Read left to right across the page, sound by sound, syllable by syllable
9. Read short books phonetically using the sounds of the phonograms

Bonus Goals:

Necesidades de aprendizaje
This class is not designed for special needs students, but those with or bordering on dyslexia can benefit.
Orientación para padres
Please have an adult oversee the student's work to be sure he or she is participating. The templates/workbook is required to be printed. So please only enroll your child if you are able to do this. This is multisensory learning. Your child should be seeing, hearing, saying, and writing the foundational content that is being delivered. Thanks for understanding. I will be using Spelling City, Google Slides, and Whizzimo. However, you will not need accounts for these since these are for screen sharing only. For the review games, we will sometimes use Kahoot! So please have a Kahoot! account set up prior to the class. Thank you. I look forward to meeting you!
Requisitos previos
Students should be able to write and say the names of the alphabet letters and some of the alphabet sounds in words.

Please see my FB page at facebook.com/classicalstarttutor for recommendations from past parents.

As a parent, I used this with my own children. I have also been successfully teaching this to private students and intervention small groups in a charter school for the past four years.

Here are two recommendations.

"Susan is an amazing teacher/tutor. She has a strong background in reading and writing and is able to turn student failure into success. I've seen students make multi-grade advances with her tutoring support."

"I highly recommend Susan Franklin. My son Matthew, who has struggled in class with reading/ writing has been working with Mrs. Susan and has really benefited. Since he has been attending tutoring (July 2016) his reading skills and confidence have improved tremendously; his school teachers have noticed the change from last year.

In the past, we have tried other various teaching tools from online videos, flashcards, and phonics in which became overwhelming. This led to frustration with our son and no direction in place to help him. Matthew and I visited with Mrs. Susan expressing our concerns regarding his reading issues that he has been experiencing at school, she presented a plan on how to approach with comprehensive lessons that Matt has followed. Mrs. Susan has shown flexibility in working with us on scheduling tutoring around soccer practices and other things that may arise. My wife and I are most grateful for the hard work and patience that Mrs. S has shown him

This makes us proud as parents knowing that our son can now read and that we have chosen the right person to teach our son Thank you, Mrs. Susan!"
