Note: The fall 2023 section of class will end on Thursday, November 9, 2023. Winter 2024 sections will begin in January, 2024. This 3 day a week class meets for 90 minutes each class day for a total of 4.5 hours a week. This length will allow the teacher to provide in-depth instruction and small group/one-on-one instruction. The content and work will not be rushed as it is in a shorter class time. There will be two movement breaks per class and one 5 minute break for restroom/snacks. Learners may also take other breaks and eat/drink as needed in class. To add second grade science please check out this class: https://outschool.com/classes/second-grade-science-first-semester-comprehensive-sciencestem-QSNCytxs?usid=MnkuzuGl&signup=true&utm_campaign=share_activity_link This class is designed as a full academic year curriculum covering second grade standards in Reading, Writing, Math and Social Studies. Each subject taught (reading, writing, math, social studies) will include a mini-lesson, group practice and independent practice. The mini lesson will include the new teaching point, which the teacher will demonstrate using a variety of teaching methods such as interactive teaching slides, the Zoom Whiteboard, Zoom breakout rooms**, teacher created books/stories and teacher created math exemplars. Balanced literacy methods, science of reading and common core standards will serve as a guide for reading, writing and math. The National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies (https://www.socialstudies.org/standards) will be used as a guide for social studies. Group and independent practice of objectives will use a multi-sensory approach. Typical manipulatives and learning tools along with common household items will be used. Examples of these manipulatives and household items include: counters, clay or dough, base ten blocks, whiteboard, markers, writing and drawing tools, dried beans and recyclable materials. The teacher will offer alternatives for materials when needed. Printouts are seldom needed for class. The teacher's role in class is to act as facilitator to deliver instruction and provide opportunities for learners to actively engage in lessons and practice. Learners will demonstrate understanding by 'doing' and applying content as they work. Small group and individual feedback will be provided in each class. The classroom environment will be interactive, lively, warm and inviting with learners taking ownership in class. The teacher views the classroom not as her own, but a space for the teacher and learners to work and create. Community in the class will be created as the teacher, learners and families work together to ensure learning success. Reading (includes phonics) lessons will occur the first day of class each week, writing the second day of class each week and math/social studies on the third day of class each week. When scissors are used in class a parent or guardian should be present to ensure learner safety and correct use of scissors. When small manipulatives and/or art and craft materials are used, it is recommended an adult is close by for supervision. Safety is paramount and the teacher will be proactive throughout class in monitoring safety and alerting adults to the need for supervision.
