Each subject taught (reading, writing, math, social studies) will include a mini-lesson, group practice and independent practice. The mini lesson will include the new teaching point, which the teacher will demonstrate using a variety of teaching methods such as interactive teaching slides, the Zoom Whiteboard, Zoom breakout rooms**, teacher created books/stories and teacher created math exemplars. Balanced literacy methods, science of reading and common core standards will serve as a guide for reading, writing and math. The National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies (https://www.socialstudies.org/standards) will be used as a guide for social studies. Group and independent practice of objectives will use a multi-sensory approach. Typical manipulatives and learning tools along with common household items will be used. Examples of these manipulatives and household items include: counters, clay or dough, base ten blocks, whiteboard, markers, writing and drawing tools, dried beans and recyclable materials. The teacher will offer alternatives for materials when needed. Printouts are seldom needed for class. The teacher's role in class is to act as facilitator to deliver instruction and provide opportunities for learners to actively engage in lessons and practice. Learners will demonstrate understanding by 'doing' and applying content as they work. Small group and individual feedback will be provided in each class. The classroom environment will be interactive, lively, warm and inviting with learners taking ownership in class. The teacher views the classroom not as her own, but a space for the teacher and learners to work and create. Community in the class will be created as the teacher, learners and families work together to ensure learning success. Reading (includes phonics) lessons will occur the first day of class each week, writing the second day of class each week and math/social studies on the third day of class each week.
