There are seven species of sea turtles today, but there have been sea turtles in the oceans of the world for the last 100 million years. Sea turtles are very important to marine ecosystems and they help to keep seagrass beds and coral reefs healthy. Students will creatively explore the life-cycle of sea turtles, the similarities and differences between the species of sea turtles, and where in the world they can be found. Along with leatherbacks, green sea turtles, and hawksbills, we will also discuss the ancient Archelon, the biggest sea turtle that ever lived!

The teacher has volunteered with sea turtles by protecting nests in Florida and hatchlings in Malaysia, and has snorkeled with sea turtles at coral reefs around the world. She has also developed environmental education curriculum materials about sea turtles for children in multiple countries. Miss Amalia will guide learners to become familiar with sea turtle ecology and share many of her own photos while facilitating games, crafts, photo slideshows, and discussions.

Day 1: Sea Turtle Life Cycle
Day 2: Sea Turtle Species

Students may also have the opportunity to interact with the Nature Explorers International classroom program animals, including:
Scaly: the Corn Snake
Slimy: the Tiger Salamander
Lizzie: The Leopard Gecko

PLEASE NOTE: Classes may run up to five minutes over the scheduled time depending on learner discussion and questions.
