In this class, assessments will primarily consist of personal assessments conducted by the teacher through observation of students during class sessions. These assessments serve to gauge each student's understanding, progress, and engagement with the material covered. Various types of assessments, such as coding exercises, project presentations, and participation in discussions, may be offered periodically to provide a comprehensive evaluation of students' learning. Assessments will typically be conducted in class to ensure real-time feedback and interaction. While participation in assessments is highly encouraged for all students to track their development and receive tailored support, they are not mandatory. However, engaging in assessments offers valuable insights and opportunities for growth, making them a beneficial aspect of the learning experience.

If semester 1 is not currently available, students may join semester 2 and be successful. Semester 2 is beginner level but focuses on game design coding.

My style of teaching is very patient, interactive, and engaging. Each student will be able to share and express themselves as they feel comfortable. Each lesson will leave them excited to create projects using the coding knowledge they acquired in class. 

This is a semester-long course lasting 12 weeks. If you are a homeschooler needing the objectives and standards met in each lesson, it can be provided upon request. We will advance each week based on students' progress. 

All class recordings will be automatically shared post-class once a student is verified unless there was a safety concern. If a student misses a class, they are encouraged to watch the recording. Please note that refunds are not provided for missed classes.

****This class is Semester 1 of a 3-semester course and is designed for NOVICE to BEGINNER level Scratch coders.

Students should be able to read and navigate a browser and zoom efficiently.
Students who are new to using a computer and reading may need parental assistance during class.

A computer desktop or laptop is preferred over the use of an iPad for Scratch.
☑️Two devices or two monitor displays would be ideal. One to watch instructions on zoom and one to use for coding.
☑️An external mouse is REQUIRED. Please no touchpads.
☑️A physical keyboard is REQUIRED. iPad virtual keyboards will not work.

Lección 1:

Introduction to the platform. X-Y Coordinates

 Add sprites and backgrounds. Learn how to save a project. Follow other Scratch coding students.

In Scratch coding, learning about x and y coordinates empowers students to precisely position and animate sprites, fostering spatial awareness and computational thinking skills.

Lección 2:

Jump Scare Slideshow

 Coders learn how to create a jump scare slideshow as a fun prank. The purpose of this project is to introduce using control blocks to cycle through backdrops and eventually create a jump scare.

Lección 3:

Animate Your Name or a Word Part 1

 In this introductory project, coders create their names using letter sprites and use code to animate each letter when clicked. The purpose of this project is to introduce coders to creating simple algorithms using a small number of blocks in Scratch.

Animate Your Name or a Word Part 2

 We will continue the previous project and animate the letters when clicked to make a sound and move.

1st grade reading level or higher. Students should be able to navigate a browser, computer apps and zoom efficiently. Understand how to use a mouse or touchpad.

Great teachers form strong relationships with their students by engaging them in the subjects they are passionate about. I have always been a logical thinker who enjoys science, math, technology, and engineering both for work and play. 

I worked as an engineer for companies like Frito-Lay, Anheuser-Busch, Amgen as a consultant for many years improving their systems with automation and equipment. Once I became a parent, I began teaching extra-curricular classes as a way to have more time at home, but stay involved in subjects that bring me joy. 

Realizing that by being warm, professional, and enthusiastic, I am able to engage students. My creative lessons and strong classroom presence help build student confidence while increasing interest in subjects that may otherwise seem intimidating.
