Welcome to Science Writing for Young Naturalists! This 8-week course is an exciting journey of learning, discovering, and creative expression in the ecological realm. Students will be invited to an inclusive space where we integrate ecosystem science concepts with narrative, science writing fundamentals. Learners will become more confident in their communications skills and critical reasoning. Each week is carefully curated to scaffold upon each other - so that learning material is introduced, practiced, refined and integrated into a capstone project. This learning is accomplished through engaging class activities, aligned and meaningful homework, and inspiring content. Every week begins with an ecology concept class. In these sessions, I use a combination of slides, audio and video clips, active discussion prompts and mini-writing sessions to engage learners and reinforce concepts. The second session in each week invites students to write, write, write! Through a series of bite-sized, captivating writing (essays, articles, poems, book passages) and intentionally designed writing prompts - students become professional writers and also connect with each other through facilitated dialogue. As each student builds their own writing portfolio each week, confidence grows. The course culminates with student portfolio presentations and gives learners the opportunity to practice public speaking skills.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello!
My name is Amy Kousch and my passion is to empower young learners to become confident environmental writers, researchers, and practitioners.
My experience as a nature-based, agroecology educator spans a robust portfolio of public presentations, guest teacher intensives, conference proceedings, community demonstrations, university instruction, and online teaching. More importantly, however, I have over two decades of experience in weaving writing instruction with science, soil, and ecological teaching for young learners from infants to teens.
Students and parents often provide feedback that names my down-to-earth connection building, enthusiasm, and generous, servant-leadership teaching style.
I have been growing, studying, teaching about and learning from plants for twenty years as a trained medicinal plant specialist (B.A. English, B.S. Natural Resources, M.S. Agricultural Sciences, current PhD student, plant sciences).
In addition to my professional experience as a plant and soil reseacher, I am also a trained writing and literature teacher and a communications specialist. My most transformational education role was when I served as a licensed, therapeutic, writing teacher for E/BD high-school students in a large city and pursued graduate studies in Special Education. I honor the student experience as paramount to success and weave guided instruction with quality mentor guidance.
I have a ten-year old son and a huge, fluffy dog named Tuggboat. We love to explore the mountains, grow plants, play sports, make art, cook and bake with fresh ingredients, and eat with friends (including Tugg)!
