It's Spring and the ecosystems are full of wonderful activities! Flowers are blooming, birds are singing, and butterflies are developing. The environment is full of amazing colors, smells, and wildlife activity. In the first week, students will learn about the formation of flowers and get an introduction into the process of photosynthesis and learn how flowers use this process to convert sunlight to food. In the following week, students will explore the wonderful world of birds and learn about their habits, migration patterns, and why they are important to their surrounding habitats. In week three, students will explore the formation of a butterfly and we will look at different species of butterflies, what makes them so unique and beautiful. In week four, we will explore different ecosystems and habitats and see how all these amazing processes come together. There are no pre-requisites to this course, just a love of spring!
Week 1: Plants & Plant Development
Week 2: Birds
Week 3: Butterfly Development
Week 4: Processes in Ecosystems

Students will work with Nearpod, an interactive software program that allows students to participate in discussion boards, answer short quizzes, go on virtual field trips, and watch interactive videos that pertain to course material.
Students will also work with Gimkit, a website that allows students to participate in interactive quizzes that will reemphasize the material presented to them in the recordings.
In this 4-week course, students will have one recording per week and receive articles corresponding to that recording. The recordings will be posted by the date the class is scheduled, so for example, if your class is on a Saturday the recordings will be posted by the end of the day on Saturday therefore the students can choose when they would like to view them. The length of the class can be extended if needed to allow students to have time to view recordings and access materials.

My entire life I wanted to explore the ocean and the environment. I have always had a great appreciation for the processes that are not completely understood and the unknowns that have yet to be discovered in the environment. At the beginning of my professional career in research, I worked as a naturalist on a whale watch boat and as a laboratory technician working on environmental cleanup projects such as water and land pollution. Then I moved into my dream job of being a research chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in marine & geochemistry where I was able to be in the foundation of the research community and learn from many amazing scientists & researchers who devoted their lives to exploring the mysteries of the environment as well as protecting the animals and organisms living in it. For me, working as a student mentor with graduate and postgraduate students, made this experience one I will always cherish. As a teacher, I want my students to be excited about what they are learning, and with my background in research, I will work extra hard to make sure that if there is an aspect of a topic that a student is interested in, I will make every effort to alter my lessons to include those topics.
