Join us for an engaging and thought-provoking book club as we delve into "Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men" by Caroline Criado Perez.

This book club is designed for young adults aged 14 to 18 who are interested in understanding gender equality, societal structures, and the impact of data bias on women's lives. Over six weeks, we will read and discuss key themes from the book, share perspectives, and explore how we can contribute to a more inclusive world. There will be weekly reading assigned and optional homework activities that students will be invited to voluntarily share their efforts on the following week.

This is one of the selection of science themed wider reading book clubs available from me, please do check out the others running too. Perfect for future medics, urban planners, CEOs, politicians, product designers, engineers, and all round aware human beings.

Goals:

1. Understand the concept of gender data bias and its real-world implications.
2. Develop critical thinking and discussion skills through guided conversations.
3. Foster an awareness of gender equality and the importance of inclusive design and policies.
4. Encourage young adults to become advocates for change in their communities.

Weekly Breakdown:

Each week several chapters of reading will be assigned, along with a small optional assignment related to the reading (usually additional research or design). On the following session will begin with a discussion of the set chapters, sharing ideas and findings, contemplating the effect of gender bias on our daily lives. Relevant recent news articles and studies will be presented to students to prompt further discussion. There will then be an opportunity for students to share their completed assignments, prompting further related discussion. Students are welcome to share their assignments with me privately for comment if they do not wish to share to their peers. The final part of the session will outline the next weeks reading, and the optional homework assignment.

Materials Needed:

A copy of "Invisible Women: Exposing Data Bias in a World Designed for Men" by Caroline Criado Perez (can be provided by the club or brought by participants).
Notebook or journal for reflections and notes.
Access to the internet for research activities.

Facilitator:
The sessions will be facilitated by me, Jess, an experienced secondary teacher, form room tutor, and confident in youth education. I will guide discussions, provide context, and support participants in their learning journey.

Hi my name is Jess, I am a science teacher in the UK with a passion for evolution, ecology, history and feminism in science. I graduated with a degree in Zoology, and love sharing the weird and wacky ways that life survives on this planet!

I look to teach a balance of academic classes covering core knowledge to prepare all learners for high school level science and beyond, but also classes that explore the wonder of the world, from amazing adaptations, to fantastic female scientists, to the weird path that science has taken through history.

I am also an avid gamer, and love immersing myself in video games or table top games. Exploring the science in video games, or hosting tables for Dungeons and Dragons campaigns is high on my list of priorities.

I also know how important it can be to just switch off and relax with a good book or some art, and would love to run a book club or relaxed art session, the idea of an afternoon sat learning about cool fungi whilst I sketch them fills me with such joy!

All my classes are written with inclusivity in mind, ensuring the learning environment is relaxed and productive, approachable for students questions and insights, backed up by 6 years in teaching, working with a range of abilities and SEND and mental health needs. My academic classes are built from my experience as an examiner in the UK, and a history of expecting high standards from my students.
