R.U.T.A.N: Readers United Together Across Novels Book Club

This course is for any reader to share their favorite book or a book they wish to discuss in a group. Each student will bring a book to class that is between 150-300 pages long and we'll read the books as a group together. Students do NOT have to own the books, but they do need to have a copy of the book for the two meetings used for discussing each book. The teacher will provide any extra suggestions needed in order to for the class to read a total of 4 books.

Teacher Suggestions:
Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen
Starfish by Lisa Flipps
Song for a Whale by Lynne Kelly
Allergic by Megan Wagner Lloyd
Red, White, and Whole by Rajiani LaRocca
New Kid by Jerry Craft
Nightmare Island by Shakirah Bourne
Amari and the Night Brothers by B.B. Alston

The first meeting will consist of introducing each book and students summarizing why it would be a good book for the book club. Students will also work together in deciding which order the books will be read. The rest of the meetings will consist of reader discussion where we talk about the plot structure, character development, and themes of the books.
Students will be expected to read each book within 2 weeks to stay on top of the reading schedule. Books will be divided in half (roughly) for the two meetings that are used for discussion. For example, if the book is 200 pages, students will have to read about 100 pages for the first meeting and the last 100 pages for the second meeting for the week. Students are always encouraged to read at their pacing for the books. Students can even stop reading the book if it's not their interest.
There will be time between the first meeting and the second for the teacher to outline the book page count for homework as well as making sure the books student wish to share are appropriate for the class.

Any genre is welcomed (graphic novels, prose, manga, nonfiction, romance, fantasy, adventure, sci-fi, short story collection, mystery, etc) and books must be within the Juvenile age range (young reader or middle grade) with page count of at least 150 pages or more. Please reach out before class if your student needs help picking a book that's in the appropriate age range.

Metas de aprendizaje

Students will be able to use their critical thinking skills to discuss what happens in books and how it relates to us.
Students will be able to expand their perspective by sharing books with others.

Perfil
Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have a Bachelor's degree in English Language and Literature Studies that included literary analysis of mythology, British and American literature, young adult literature and children literature. I have worked with children ages 10-18 to help them think and question about the stories/media they enjoy.
My classrooms are LGBTQIA+ and Neurodiverse inclusive. I have worked on Outschool the past 5 years mainly in group classes to foster community, inclusivity, and collaboration. I value each of my students by encouraging them to share their thoughts, opinions, and interests while helping them see that same value and respect for each other despite their differences.
