Raíces y reglas: vocabulario y ortografía básicos

In this class, readers at a late 1st to early 3rd grade reading level will learn how to study words closely. In each class, we will examine at least one prefix or suffix. We will apply these prefixes and/or suffixes to common base words, define, and  explore the meaning of the new words we create. We will examine parts of speech as they relate to these new words. In addition, we will examine related spelling rules and practice writing the new words while applying spelling rules.


Week of March 24: Suffix -s, -es
Week of March 31: Suffix -ing
Week of April 7: Suffix -ed
Week of April 14: Prefixes un-, dis-
Week of April 21: Prefix re-, mis-
Week of April 28: Suffix -er
Week of May 5: Suffix -est
Week of May 12: Suffixes -able/-ible
Week of May 19: Suffixes -ful/-less
Week of May 26: in/im/il/ir-






When mixing prefixes and suffixes that are not specifically the focus of the day’s lesson, any appropriate information will be included for spelling and making meaning. 

Students should be prepared each week with a white board and marker (or paper and marker—pencil is difficult to see over zoom).
