In this three-week teacher-led; 40-minute, twice-a-week course, we will read "James and the Giant Peach" by Roald Dahl and compare it to the movie (if we have seen it). We will play theme-related games, look at the five story elements, and answer study questions for reading comprehension. We will also keep a vocabulary journal of words we do not know and discuss them in class.

Week 1Lesson 1NO required reading before the first classWe will go over the reading schedule of this class, learn how to keep a vocabulary journal and learn a little bit about the author, Roald Dahl. We will talk a little bit about the fantasy genre. We will draw a cover for our book based on the summary we read in class. We will play a game using the title of the book.Lesson 2Have chapters 1 - 10 read before classWe will go over vocabulary words. We will answer reading comprehension study questions. We will talk about the characters of the book. We will draw a character wheel where we will write adjectives and talk about each of the characters in depth. We will talk about kindness. In what ways can we show kindness? How can James be so kind when his Aunts are so mean? We will play a word scramble game.Week 2Lesson 3Have chapters 11 - 18 read before classWe will go over vocabulary words. We will answer reading comprehension study questions. We will learn a little bit about the White Cliffs of Dover in England. What are they? Why are they popular? We will write a few interview questions for the bugs. We will talk about where we think James and the bugs are going. We will draw a picture of the peach in the air with its residents.Lesson 4Have chapters 19 - 24 read before classWe will go over vocabulary words. We will answer reading comprehension study questions. We will talk about the boat called The Queen Mary. What was it? What did it do? Who was it named after? We will play a bug matching game and match fun facts to each bug.Week 3Lesson 5Have chapters 25 - 30 read before classWe will go over vocabulary words. We will answer reading comprehension study questions. We will be talking about personification. We will play a James and the Giant Peach Jeopardy game.Lesson 6Finish reading the book chapters 31 - 39We will go over vocabulary words. We will answer reading comprehension study questions. We will talk about the resolution of the book and what may happen after the story ends. We would play a game of "Would you Rather?" and talk about the book's themes.
