This course will be an interactive exploration of rhythm. Learners will demonstrate rhythm with body percussion and optional instruments. Learners will be provided with a variety of visuals through screen sharing and a document camera. 

Age-appropriate activity sheets will be provided for learners to facilitate understanding and participation in activities - 1) beat and rhythm cards, 2) picture cards for creating word rhythms, 3) song answer cards, 4) traditional notation cards.

Lección 1:
Rhythm is Long and Short Sounds
 After introductions, learners will learn a song that defines beat and rhythm, playing beat or rhythm during the appropriate part of the song. Then a game of “Move and Freeze” where learners will move when the teacher plays notes and freeze when the teacher "plays" rests. Next, we will explore rhythm in rhymes or songs. Finally, learners will demonstrate rhythm while listening to a musical picture book.

Lección 2:
Beat or Rhythm
 Learners will review the beat and rhythm song. Then, a game of  "Beat or Rhythm" where learners will determine whether beat or rhythm is being played, holding up a card to show their answer. Next, learners will collaborate to arrange words to create rhythms (preparation for next day). Finally, learners will demonstrate rhythm while listening to a musical picture book.

Lección 3:
Arrange a Rhythm
 Learners will review the beat and rhythm song. Then a game of "Which One?" where learners determine which rhythm is played using pictures to represent rhythm. Then, learners will arrange their own rhythms using provided pictures and learners will have the opportunity to play their rhythm for the class. Finally, learners will demonstrate rhythm while listening to a musical picture book.

Lección 4:
Traditional Notation
 Learners will review the beat and rhythm song. Then, learners will play "Name that Rhythm" determining which song rhythm is being played. Next, learners will learn about traditional notation for quarter notes and eighth notes, reading and playing examples. Learners will arrange notes to create their own rhythms and share with the class (may continue on week 5). Finally, learners will demonstrate rhythm while listening to a musical picture book.

Learners may need assistance cutting apart the handouts for class.

Learners can use percussion instruments or found sounds that they have at home to play rhythm throughout the course.

Activity sheets will be uploaded to the classroom closer to the start date. Learners will need help cutting apart the sheets for each week.

Hello! My name is Mrs. McArthur and I teach MUSIC! I am a Texas certified all-level music teacher with 29 years of teaching experience, 26 years in public schools and 3 years online and homeschool experience. I have taught preschool through eighth grade General Music and Choir classes. I received a Bachelor's Degree in Music Education with an emphasis in vocal music from Oklahoma Baptist University.

I believe that every learner can make music! Learners need a variety of experiences to learn music skills, including visual, aural and kinesthetic. Given sequential steps, students can achieve well beyond the expectations. When creativity is modeled, learners discover that making mistakes improves music. Learners need opportunities to be creative with choices so they can create on their own terms and interests. By making connections to science, social studies, math and beyond, students learn that subjects don’t exist in isolation. Music is the universal language and learners deserve a chance to explore the world through a musical lens!
