In this one time class we will learn the basics of the recorder. This will include finger placement, mouth & tongue placement, and breathing & air support. We will begin the class talking about the different parts of the recorder. We will practice finger positions without the recorder and then with the recorder without playing, to help learners increase their finger dexterity. After we have practiced finger positioning, we will have a couple of tongue exercises to practice proper tongue placement, to help learners create the best sound they can on the recorder. Finally, we will practice breathing through breathing games. Once we have practiced these three things we will put them all together to play our first note! We will learn three notes and play a simple melody at the end of the class. This class is meant for learners with no previous experience with the recorder. It is a great introduction class to take before beginning the ongoing class, Recorder 101 - Let's Learn to Play Recorder!

Adult help would be helpful for young learners just starting on the recorder. They often need help placing their fingers in the correct places and covering the finger holes.

Learners will need to bring a recorder to class. We will be learning soprano recorder, so please be sure your learner's recorder is a soprano recorder. It is also important that the recorder be 2 or 3 pieces so that we can practice with just the head joint for mouth & tongue and breathing exercises, and just the bottom section for fingering exercises. Please let me know if you have any questions about recorder type.

I'm Ms. Meredith and I live in northeastern Massachusetts. I consider myself to be a lifelong learner, and I hope to motivate others, especially young learners, to become lifelong learners as well! I aim to encourage young learners to find a passion that will inspire them to love learning and lead them to continue learning throughout their lives.
I have a Bachelor of Arts in Music and Bachelor of Music in Music Therapy from Immaculata University in Pennsylvania and a STB Theology degree from the Pontificia Universita San Tommaso D'Aquino in Rome, Italy. I have worked with learners of all ages in many different capacities for over 15 years. I have been a summer camp counselor, swim instructor, peer mentor, online ESL teacher, and I was a nanny and English language tutor for a family in Italy for three years. I currently work full-time teaching music and theology to learners of all ages.
When I am not teaching you can find me traveling or cooking! I have lived in 4 different States and also in Italy for 5 years. My travels have taken me to 49 States in the USA and 31 countries throughout North America and Europe. I would love to share my stories, experiences, and what I have learned through my travels with young learners to help them to recognize and appreciate the beauty and diversity of our country and our world.
