Developed by parent request! This is the popular "Real Talk: Advanced Conversational Skills for Kids" class, made just for younger elementary-aged learners (approximately ages five to nine years). In this class, beneficial social skills will be taught, practiced, and reviewed in an age-appropriate manner that is fun and fulfilling for younger learners. Because this is an ongoing class, learners may join at any time. Topics will vary week to week, and are chosen based on two factors: teacher's choice of an important skill, and skills or social situations that learners request be covered in class. Sample schedule: Week 1 (10/13/24): Greetings Week 2 (10/20/24): Can I Play? Week 3 (10/27/24): Playing Catch With Conversation Week 4 (11/3/24): Friend Qualities Week 5 (11/10/24): Please and Thank You Week 6 (11/24/24): When You Hear "No" Week 7 (12/1/24): I Win, You Win: Being a Good Sport **Learner Suggestion!!** Week 8 (12/15/24): I REALLY Need Help Week 9 (12/22/24): Is That Okay? In January and February, we'll be discussing: -Bucket Filling -Being "Polite" - what does that mean? -Why "Thank You" is important -Feeling Nervous - how does it feel, and what do you do? **Learner Suggestion!!** -Feeling Nervous About Going to a Party **Learner Suggestion!!** -What If I Run Out of Things to Talk About? -That's Not Fair! -That Kid Took My Turn -My Friend Has a Problem Each class will involve a greeting, class expectations, a topic, and practice. The more learners practice the skills and become comfortable with them, the more likely they are to attempt these skills outside of class, and therefore generalize the skills! Classes are guided by slides, but learning will be multi-modal to support a variety of learning styles (i.e. learning via reading, listening, speaking, typing, drawing, moving, singing, looking at photos, looking at pictures, social stories, etc.). My style is upbeat, positive, warm, empathetic, and caring. Learners will be shown genuine care and acceptance. Classes are designed to be fun and safe practice spaces. Learners who are neurotypical and neurodiverse - and everything in between! - are all welcome in this class.

All content presented will be developmentally-appropriate for the age group. If individual learners bring up topics that may be sensitive (e.g. divorce, death, Covid-19, vaccines, etc.), the teacher will provide guidance and segue away from the topic.

There are no materials needed for the class, although at times we might use a writing or drawing implement and paper or a white board. The teacher will give prior notice in the classroom if these items are needed.

Suzanne holds an M.A. in Education - Speech-Language Pathology, and a B.A. in Linguistics (cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, Campuswide Honors Program, Linguistics Honors Program), with an emphasis in Sociolinguistics and a secondary emphasis in Historical Linguistics. She is a speech-language pathologist, an educator, and a parent of three kids with various special learning and health needs. She is also a twice-exceptional/NAT individual. In high school, she was on drill/dance team and in theatre, belonged to a slew of clubs, played in two string ensembles, was an award-winning creative writer, and was a National Merit Commended Scholar.
She has experience (as a professional, a parent, or a volunteer) across the full spectrum of education, including public school, private school (secular, Christian, International Baccalaureate), homeschool, homeschool co-op, online school, de-schooling, mainstream education, special education, special day class, Deaf/HOH schools, and day care. She is familiar with a variety of curricula and has also developed her own curricula. She has approximately 20 years of experience as speech-language pathologist, and has been volunteering in schools since she was a fifth grader (more years ago than she'll admit). She has dedicated her life to lifting children up and supporting their educational and socio-emotional needs.
In her spare time - when she has any - she is a performer (dance production, modeling, on-screen acting), manages her daughter's acting career, reads voraciously, plays multiple instruments, goes to the gym, tends to her garden, slays at real estate investing, and takes walks with her dog (who sometimes shows up on camera in class) and her husband.
