Students will interact with the instructor and each other to learn how to keep their conversational skills "in the zone" in order to build communication confidence and peer relationships. I am keeping enrollment small on purpose so that students have maximal chances to practice their emerging skills. We'll discuss certain social situations, practice scripts, problem-solve, troubleshoot, and discuss. Because learners excel differently, multiple modalities are used: text, photos, drawings, lecture, discussion, gestures. Class 1: Brush up on what it means to be "in the zone" or "out of the zone"; what we think versus what we say; convo practice. Class 2: Review what we think versus what we say; picking conversational topics by knowing your audience; convo practice. Class 3: Review picking conversational topics; asking questions; turn taking; convo practice. My teaching style is engaging, warm, enthusiastic, real, and empathetic. All learners welcome: neurotypical, neurodiverse, all gender expressions, religious/secular. Students might want to take Level 1 first or concurrently, but that is not required at all.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will improve their communication skills by learning to be "in the zone" with their conversations. They'll learn the difference between thinking and saying, using clues to determine if their conversational partner is acting positively or negatively to their communication, and how to ask questions as a start to true turn-taking. And, of course, there will be conversational practice in EVERY class!
