In this class students will read and reflect on "Rolling Warrior: The Incredible and Sometimes Awkward True Story of a Rebel Girl on Wheels Who Helped Spark a Revolution", the autobiography of activist Judith Heumann. We will also explore the disability rights movement from other perspectives as well as hearing the voices of individuals who are advocating for disability rights today. Students will be encouraged to think critically and respond to the reading through a number of instructional supports including graphic organizers, creative writing, drawing etc. Students are also welcome to share their ideas verbally by making and posting videos in our online classroom. The high interest, low reading level nature of this book and the use of graphic organizers and multiple ways to respond to the text make this an excellent class for kids with ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, and other learning differences to learn about history by reading a compelling text. Since this class is self- paced, students will not join live meetings. ***Be sure to let me know if you need additional time to complete the course. I can extend the teacher comment period.

Orientación para padres
Learners may be exposed to some mild swearing and bleeped foul language in the videos posted for the class. Judith's experiences were sometimes very challenging in her quest for equal protection under the law. She describes her protest experience in detail as well as her experiences in a disability segregated classroom throughout her early years. This is a middle grade and up book, and the language and experiences shared are more appropriate for that age of learner.
