In this five-week course, learners read Ray Bradbury’s novel, Fahrenheit 451 and write a critical essay or short story in response. Before each lesson, learners complete reading tasks. In the first and last weeks, we read Bradbury's description of the influences for and legacy of Fahrenheit 451. During weeks 2-4, learners read part 1, part 2 and part 3 of the novel. Each 'part' is about 60 pages long. During each lesson we re-read key sections of the novel developing the three skills of textual analysis. First, we analyse the characters and their desires. Second, we analyse Bradbury’s writing style and the literary devices he uses. Finally, we finish by discussing personal responses to the text and its themes. In addition to this, each week I explain, step-by-step, how to plan, draft, write and revise a critical essay or a short story. Learners base their work on Bradbury’s novel and are also encouraged to weave experiences from history, the news or from the learner's own life into their writing. This course is suitable for learners who can spell accurately, are fluent readers and are mature enough to understand the themes of the story. The skills learners develop during this course are transferable to other English Literature or ELA lessons and will enhance their study of other novels. If you have any questions about this class please do not hesitate to send me a message.

Necesidades de aprendizaje
As an experienced teacher with over twenty years in the classroom and five years online, I can adapt lessons to meet the needs of all learners.
Orientación para padres
From the beginning of the book, Bradbury makes reference (sometimes implicitly) to the following topics: suicide, drunkenness, sexism, drug dependency, dieting/fatness, pornography, equality/equity, consumerism, rape and abortion.
Parents may wish to read the book in advance of or alongside their learners so that topics can be discussed in advance.
Requisitos previos
To make the most of this class, your child needs to be a fluent reader.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I have been a qualified (certified) primary (elementary) school teacher in England for over 20 years. During that time, I have taught grammar, writing composition and Latin to hundreds of children. I mix classic literature and old-fashioned grammar with a friendly approach to help all learners find success.
In addition to this, I am finishing a master’s degree in mathematics with education at the University of Cambridge. I specialised in the teaching of abstract concepts and understanding how teachers can help pupils to excel in mathematics at school.
I am dedicated to teaching children the knowledge and skills they need for academic success. I am passionate about hard-working children whose academic potential is unnoticed in busy classrooms.
