Being a reading detective is crucial in the next step of reading - reading to learn. Often students read fluently but fail to comprehend what they are reading. In this interactive, group class, students will learn how to use clues to understand what they are reading, taking them from learning to read to reading to learn.

In class, learners will practice their fluency skills while reading aloud, learn new vocabulary, and practice reading comprehension strategies (common core state standards are detailed below) such as details, main idea, inferences, sequencing, context clues, characters, settings, and more. Please see the Common Core State Standards listed below.

Each session begins with a few minutes of classroom chatting so we can get to know our students and they can get to know each other. Then we move quickly into the introduction of the reading comprehension strategy for the week. After the introduction to the topic, students will then practice this strategy through class reading activities. During class, students will take turns reading round-robin. As students read, I will assist them with pronunciation and proper reading techniques, like speed and fluency. The passages that students will read will predominantly be on the second-grade level.

HOMEWORK - We teach "Practice Makes Progress"! With that being said after each class we send an email detailing the skill we worked on in class and a home practice worksheet. (Please make sure your class communication is turned on). This is not graded by us, but the answers will be included for you (the parent or guardian) to assess the student at home as well.

You will find the teachers at Achieve Learning Partners friendly, patient, and encouraging, meeting each student where they are academically. We help them build the confidence needed to succeed.

This is an ongoing class and students can come and go as needed. Don't be afraid to jump in and out. Any extra reading practice is good! If you need to miss a class, you can stay enrolled and will have access to the class recording and practice worksheets.

ESL students are welcome in this class. It is a great class for them to hear other students talk, read, and answer questions. If we feel the level is not appropriate, we will let you know.
