Reading Can Be Puzzling: Kindergarten is a cumulative course for learners who are not yet reading independently, but are familiar with letter sounds, blending CVC words such as "cat", "bed", and "hug", and knows some sight/high frequency words such as "the", "some" "an" etc. If your child has letter sounds down, but can't read books independently yet, this is the course for them! I N T H I S C O U R S E: We will cover kindergarten reading concepts including: We will learn: ✅Letter Sounds (Phonemes) ✅Blending and Orthographic Mapping ✅Sight and High Frequency Words ✅Long Vowels Using the "Bossy /e/" Rule ✅Some Digraphs and Diphthongs ✅Beginner Fluency ✅Linear Reading Learners will also work on fluency and comprehension by reading and practicing booklets that go with each lesson as well as decodables. T E A C H I N G S T Y L E: ⭐Our teaching style at Shields Scholars is light-hearted and fun. ⭐We use Nearpod for this course, which is an interactive app for the lesson content. This way, kids not only learn via visual and auditory learning, they get to learn kinesthetically as well since they are physically involved in the lesson with simple games such as matching, drawing, memory tests, drag & drop features, and everyone's favorite - Time to Climb. Time to Climb is an interactive quiz where each child chooses a character for the game and as they answer questions correctly, their character races other students to the top of a mountain. R E A D I N G A S S E S S M E N T S: Students do not need to have prior knowledge of reading to enroll into this course. There is nothing specifically making this course ADHD friendly, however I have taught students who have ADHD and they did really well! The interactivity of Nearpod was always their favorite part and there were much less fits about class.

Parents and/or guardians, please read the classroom announcements page prior to class to get your learner set up before class begins. Your learner may also need help throughout the lesson to complete the games and use the features, at least at the beginning of the course. This class is for young learners who may not fully understand how to click on a computer or set up NearPod on their own.
All communications will be updated via the classroom page, so please have your notifications turned on. This way Outschool will forward any and all classroom posts to your email so you don't miss any announcements.

This course is very beginner and I have had lots of students as young as 3 years old complete it, but age is just a number. If your child does NOT know how to blend CVC words independently and automatically, this is where they need to start

WHAT IS NEARPOD? NearPod is an interactive, online resource that we use for class. NearPod includes games relevant to the lesson to keep learners engaged the entire time since there is something for them to be focusing on and physically doing every few minutes. This can include little quizzes, matching, drag & drop, drawing, 3D, virtual reality, etc. Nearpod is COPPA (Children's Online Privacy Protection Act) compliant. If available, two devices is ideal for these classes. Most of my students like to have Zoom up on one device and NearPod on a touch device such as a tablet, iPad, or smartphone to make clicking on answers easy for little fingers. Cassondra Shields (Ms. Cassie):
Cassondra has been an ESL (English as a second language) teacher for four years to the age groups 3-15. She graduated from the Honor's Program at The University of Nevada, Reno with a research thesis on adolescent conduct disorder attributes and how those attributes were statistically represented in adult incarceration and recidivism rates based on longitudinal study results. In order to conduct this type of research, Cassondra studied behavior, neurology, and psychology of children for several years as well as additional English and writing courses to write about this type of research. She has brought her expertise on child development and learning behaviors to Outschool as the curriculum developer for Shields Scholars. Cassondra is also a homeschool mom to her own children.

Rheagan Bloomquist (Ms. Rheagan):
Rheagan earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Texas A&M University-San Antonio. She has a passion for helping people, and she believes every child can succeed when given the chance. She has experience working with elementary school children in her local independent school district. She also has prior experience teaching special needs kids. What Rheagan wants most is to make education exciting rather than scary; her goal is to help all children feel welcome, safe, and smart. She is excited to create a nurturing and fun learning environment for all children with Shield’s Scholars.

Kirste earned her Bachelor’s degree from Moody Bible Institute, and she holds a certificate in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). She has valuable teaching experience at an international school in Tunis, Tunisia. She has tutored students from various countries, including Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Kurdistan, and China. She is passionate about helping children thrive in their learning and loves encouraging them to recognize their progress from the very beginning to where they are now. She believes that parents are the real youth leaders and is here to support and encourage the family as they effectively lead their homes and come alongside their children to encourage and help them grow with a passion for learning.
