Poetry is a form of literature that is misunderstood. Many learners ask why is it written this way or why does it rhyme? Learning about the parts of poems will help learners understand the patterns of rhyme scheme, stanzas, meters, and the use of figurative speech in a poem. They learn that poets share their messages by using special words and by placing their lines on the page in special ways. Most poems are written to talk about normal, everyday things or feelings in new and unusual ways. The poetry tips will help each learner understand the methods of poetry writing. Understanding the form and style of a poem will encourage each learners’ imagination and creative thinking. From this, learners will apply what they have learned about poetry to design and create a poetry card. Learners will read, analyze, and discuss a poem. They will also use what they have learned about the different forms and styles of poetry to write, create, and design a poetry card. Learners will focus on a form of poem. Each learner will write a poem based on the form we are reading and analyzing. Below is a breakdown of the instructional format section: Before class: 1. First read of the assigned poem. 2. Read and analyze focused interactive poetry tips on an interactive Google Slides presentation. 3. Read and analyze focused interactive literary elements on an interactive Google Slides presentation. During Class: Ice Breaker & Introduction: Play a discussion game called, “What do You Think…?” (This face-to-face discussion is where learners share their knowledge about the literary element of the poem.) Poetry Analysis Discussion: 1. Discuss the literary element of the assigned poem. 2. Discuss the poetry tip of the assigned poem. 3. Second read of the assigned poem. 4. As learners analyze the assigned poem, they will complete a literary element graphic organizer. Creativity Time: Design and Create a Poetry Card Based on the poem, learners will create a similar poem of the style and form of the assigned poem. They will write a poem, design, and create a poetry card to be given or kept. Learners will begin their poetry card in class and complete it after class. Share Out: If finished, learners can share their poetry card with other learners the last few minutes of class. I will upload any files needed for the class a few days prior to the start of the class. Please download and print, if necessary, so that your learner is prepared for class.

Hello! I am so excited about teaching Reading, Language Arts, and Social Studies on Outschool. One of my favorite mottos is, “Happy Learning! Happy Teaching! Happy Learning!” I incorporate this motto into my philosophy of teaching in that I am happy and excited about learning and teaching and I want my students to be happy as well with hands-on, interactive, and project-based learning.
I have been teaching for 24 years in public schools and online and I have the following degrees: M.S. degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment; B.S. degree in Exceptional Education K-12; and an A.S. degree in Business Administration. I also have teaching certificates for Elementary Education K – 6, Middle Grades English 6-9, and English 9-12. I also have my Reading and ESOL/ELL endorsements. I also have attended and received certificates for the following: C.R.I.S.S. Strategies, Kagan Cooperative Strategies, Response to Intervention (MTSS) training and I am also a Lesson Study Facilitator/Trainer. I have taught Reading, English Language Arts and Social Studies in the middle and high school settings and I have taught all subject areas in the elementary setting. My students have included the general education and exceptional education population. I have taught students with varying exceptionalities such as autism, behavior disorders, learning disabilities, and physical disabilities, to name a few.
My hobbies/nonacademic passions include but are not limited to sewing dolls and quilts, scrapbooking, crafting, and cooking. I love to incorporate learners’ hobbies and interests into my teaching so that they realize how closely related and important an education is to their real-world interests.
I have two wonderful, energetic, and exciting grandchildren who keep me on my toes. They are in first and second grade. I have been teaching them online this summer. They are my joy.
I look forward to our first learning adventure. See you very soon.
