If you’re seeing red or feeling blue, then our class on writing a free verse poem about a colour will soon have you in the pink again. Others will be green with envy when they read your brilliant poem!

Join us as we explore a kaleidoscope of language to build a poem about a colour. Perhaps it’ll be your favourite colour, or one that you think will be fun to play around with using words.

We’ll talk about what free verse poetry is and how it can help to create our poems without the pressure of worrying about rhyming schemes or rhythm.

Learners will start by choosing their colour and we’ll go on to build a bank of ideas and words using different aspects of what that colour makes us think of.
We’ll discuss how we can use the words and phrases we’ve written and experiment with moving them around.
Learners will then have time to write their colour poem, using the ideas and techniques we’ve covered. Perhaps they'd even like to write using different colours.
I’ll be modelling a poem along with the class so that learners can see the process.

Learners will be encouraged to share their poems either in the chat feature or by reading them out. If they would rather not share in class, that’s fine too. Learners can upload their poems to the classroom afterwards or send them directly to me if they like but they don’t have to share if they’d prefer not.

Writing is my passion and as well as majoring in English at university, along with Theatre Arts, I've almost 20 years of experience in teaching English in primary schools. Over those years, I have worked regularly with groups of children specifically on English writing skills and teaching creative writing online.
I have both written poetry and taught poetry over many years.
