In this course, we will use build a program that connects to a rhyming engine. Our "robot" program in python will take words that are entered in and send them to the rhyming API engine, from there we will get back a list of rhymes. We will build the program collaboratively, and discuss programming and data concepts in python as we go. This class is best for students with some background in python or programming. As a group, we will build and test the script, and then make sure it works. Students will all get a copy of the code and this can be used as the basis for other connected data projects in python and beyond.
Metas de aprendizaje
Being able to connect to, and work with, many kinds of data is a key skill in programming and data analysis. In this course we will learn how to input a user query (the user submitting a word), sending it to the free rhyme API, getting back a response (a list of rhyming words), and have the robot print out the results. We will discuss data concepts in python, and how to work with JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) data.

Orientación para padres
Its possible that students may enter 'bad' words, and this could generate rhyming responses. To minimize this, we will be using a shared programming interface and this elements will be moderated. There are a lot of funny and interesting words for our robot to use, so we will stick with those.
Lista de útiles escolares
The code will be supplied at the end of each session. Users can either use a web based program (like PythonAnywhere) or install python with an IDE (both of which are free), like IDLE, Geany, or Sublime Text, in addition to many other options. Python does not need to be installed to collaborate in this class as we will be sharing the screen and programming together.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
I love teaching programming using fun and interesting examples because it helps students go farther than learning hard to contextualize concepts. Understanding what we are doing and why means that students will be able to apply algebraic concepts (like x+y) having understood examples like (red bike + blue bike) in a way that has context and meaning.
