In this class, students get to choose the math topic(s) they would like to receive support on or learn more about. We can go over homework problems, work through practice book pages, review questions for upcoming quizzes/tests, complete quiz/test correction, prepare for state testing, or learn new topics that haven’t been taught in school yet. When solving math problems, I will walk students through the procedures step-by-step. I will break challenging topics down into smaller pieces, making them easier for students to comprehend. In addition, I will provide students with various examples and visuals in order to enhance their understanding of the concepts. By the end of class, students will be able to solve similar math problems on their own. If needed, I can provide them with worksheets as extra practice, which they can complete independently. Please send any topics or math materials that you would like to be covered before the session starts so that we can make the best use of our time together! Topics may include: 🎒Operations with Integers, Fractions, and Decimals 🎒Properties of Exponents 🎒Scientific Notations 🎒Ratio, Proportion, and Percent 🎒Geometric Figures 🎒Perimeter, Area, and Volume 🎒Pythagorean Theorem 🎒Variables and Expressions 🎒Linear Equations 🎒Distributive Property 🎒Inequalities 🎒Graphing Functions 🎒Transformation of Functions 🎒Systems of Equations (excludes using matrices) 🎒Probability/Statistics (excludes difficult statistical problems that require the use of various formulas) *Please note that there is no make-up session for any missed classes and no refund on any unproductive sessions caused by math materials not being shared by parent/student before the sessions.*

👋 Hello and welcome! My name is Phoenix. I love working with students and engaging them in trying out different strategies to solve challenging math problems! I enjoy being a part of students' “Eureka!” moments when they finally figured something out or accomplished something that they thought was extremely difficult or nearly impossible. I aim to share the beauty of math with students and teach them in a way that allows them to embrace math excitedly instead of avoiding it due to math anxiety.
Professionally, I have more than 13 years of tutoring experience and 7 years of teaching experience. I have worked with thousands of students in person and online. I have taught classes to groups as large as 35 students in a room and as small as one-on-one. While attending high school in 2011, I started tutoring elementary and middle school students in math. After graduating from university with a Bachelor of Science in Teaching of Mathematics in 2017, I have been teaching and tutoring math to students from elementary to high school. I believe that students learn best by doing and aim to create classes that focus on having students explore and solve problems.
Outside of teaching, I enjoy crocheting, cooking & baking, painting, hiking, playing Team Fight Tactics, and watching anime & Korean drama. I look forward to meeting you!

🎉 Below is a glimpse of what parents have been saying about my classes...
“Miss Phoenix is an outstanding math tutor for my fifth grade daughter. My daughter benefits enormously from having one-on-one practice time to work through the math she’s learning in the classroom. Although I’ve helped her in the past, we both agreed that this year it would be better for her to work with someone neutral who thoroughly understands math (and how to teach it). Miss Phoenix is that person! She’s encouraging, kind and supportive, and has consistently high expectations for my daughter. If she’s struggling to find an answer, Miss Phoenix walks her through the problem/process, or helps her find a different path to answering a question when she’s stuck. In a low-key, gentle way, she pushes my daughter to stick to it and maintain her focus. Miss Phoenix also notices the areas where my daughter is struggling, and gives her extra practice/attention in those areas, making sure that she thoroughly understands the material. My daughter has loved Miss Phoenix and working with her from the first session. Miss Phoenix has a wonderful grounded presence that puts my daughter at ease and helped quickly build her trust. Most importantly, Miss Phoenix is helping her build discipline, confidence and joy in math problem-solving. I wish everyone (especially girls) could have this kind of teaching and mentorship! I’m so grateful we found Miss Phoenix and look forward to my daughter working with her throughout the school year.”
“This class has been an A+ experience. My daughter can be quite resistant to tutoring sessions of any kind, especially in math. In fact, I was embarrassed at how unenthusiastic my daughter was during her first session with Phoenix. But Phoenix took it in stride and was not ruffled in the least! By the end of the session my daughter was cheerful and reported to me that "Ms. Phoenix is fun." And last week she came home with a 100% on her most recent math test at school. Thank you, Ms. Phoenix!”
“My 13-year-old got behind at the beginning of algebra 1 and needed help getting caught up. Ms. Phoenix was the perfect choice because she will work with him on exactly what he needs. He is doing well in his class now but wants to keep working with her because she is, in his words, kind and explains things well. The 1:1 setting is perfect because it maximizes what they can get done and is tailored just to his needs. I send her copies of his assignments ahead of the session and she helps with test reviews as well as completing and checking assignments, and correcting and reviewing what he didn't understand from his classes during the week. He goes back to school on Monday with all of his math work completed, with a clearer understanding of what's happening in class than he had at the end of the week.”
“My 12 year old just finished her first session. She immediately connected with Ms. Phoenix and is looking forward to her next session. She had some homework that she was unsure of and by the end of the session she was all smiles and confident! I was looking for extra help for my daughter as she was moved up a level in middle school but was left behind quickly as she had not been introduced to several topics that she was soon to be tested on. Looking forward to my daughter loving math again!”
“I highly recommend Ms. Phoenix for math tutoring. My 8th grade daughter really enjoys her weekly tutoring sessions. Ms. Phoenix explains the math concepts in an easy manner, this gives my daughter a great confidence in math. My daughter often explains difficult concepts to her peers in class using her knowledge taught from Ms. Phoenix. Ms. Phoenix is also fantastic in helping my daughter study before tests.”
“Mrs Phoenix is absolutely wonderful! She reached out to us before we started the tutoring with questions about what we would like to work on. She has the ability to assess exactly where your child needs are and where to start. My daughter loves her way of teaching because she is positive, encouraging and fun! She always makes sure the topic that is covered is being understood before moving on. I also love that she’s available via email in between classes for any assignments/assistance.”
“This is our second year with Ms. Phoenix. My daughter finds her guidance very helpful with what is being taught in her math class at school. She can always get extra support/explanations/solutions to class work that she’s not sure on. Her confidence during tests improved last year and I'm sure this year will be similar.”
