Teaching literacy is fraught with challenges and soundbites. Literacy learning is complex, especially for students who have been left behind. I am a "literacy problem solver." My goal is to find what skill the student has mastered and decipher where the challenges lie. I read academic literature and put it into practice. The following are the foundations of my teaching including many aspects of literacy. Sight Words Mastery: I make abstract sight words concrete and memorable, using poetry tailored to each child for easier recall. Whole Words to Parts: Starting with whole words, I teach patterns like ‘ock’ words (lock, sock, etc.), first in isolation, then in context with engaging activities. Letter-Sound Association: We explore consonant blends (lock vs. block) to reinforce the critical sound-symbol connection with various teaching methods. Writing Skills: From modeling writing to keyboarding, I offer multiple approaches to writing, including error detection and sentence construction. Words with Multiple Meanings: Through drama, acting & poetry, I help students grasp the nuances of words, ensuring deep comprehension. Reading Fluency: Poetry is the first step; turning books into plays enhances attention, concentration, and active learning. Student Choice: Offering choices in activities gives students control and input, making learning personalized and effective. This comprehensive approach interconnects various literacy components, ensuring a cohesive and effective learning experience.

Embarking on Outschool, my journey in literacy began with one student, who at seven faced a bleak future after failing first grade. Diagnosed with a “low IQ” and able to read only ten words, his prospects seemed dire. My next student, age 13, spent 4 years in a "phonics-only" reading program, only to leave unable to read a sentence. Teaching these students allowed me to craft lessons to meet their unique needs. These students both graduated high school and college.
I wrote a book titled Reversed: A Memoir which adds more details of both me and my students. My book has a 4.5 rating on Goodreads from over 200 reviews.
With a passion forged from personal experience and cultural richness, I served as the District Reading Specialist in Lubbock, Texas, aiding students aged 7 to 17 with similar struggles. My commitment extended to providing teacher training, speaking at conferences, and contributing to academic literature.
I see myself as more than an educator—I am a “literacy problem-solver,” dedicated to developing innovative methods for teaching those with dyslexia or reading difficulties. My mission has taken me across continents, from Australia to Texas and New York, relentlessly helping students overcome their literacy hurdles and achieve reading success.
