The reading comprehension requirements at the middle school and high school levels are a lot more than they are for elementary school. It's not just reading a passage and answering multiple-choice questions anymore. Students are expected to be able to identify the author's intent, decipher voices, and make informed predictions about the text that they can back up with proof. My degree is in creative writing, but I am a lover of reading and have taken all the advanced literary theory classes I could sign up for! Class is structured to be fun, interactive, and a "think outside the box" kind of environment. We will be picking passages from very unique stories and famous authors to pick apart and learn from! Passages will be age and grade-appropriate. The Last of the Really Great Whangdoodles is a favorite for most students! (I'm full of weird/good ideas!) :D This course will be personalized for each student individually for both their needs and age/grade level. Some of the skills the class may cover are the following: For middle school students: --> Being able to comprehend and visualize the text, form educated questions, understand the reading path, character development, make predictions, reflect and connect the text to their own experiences, being able to summarize the main ideas, determine between fact and detail, cause and effect, and most importantly, write clear and concise responses to reading comprehension questions. For high school students: We will cover all the skills from the middle school list plus the following --> Literary lenses; being able to identify which one a book is intended for but also being able to apply other lenses to the same text. Identify intended theme, tone, and symbols, read for meaning "new criticism", brainstorm mapping, active reading with annotation, research skills, vocabulary, and word maps. Class can also be structured to assist students with their own homework and reading projects from school.
