Atoms are the basic building blocks of all matter. The computer you are reading this on, the building you are in, the beverage you are drinking, you, me, the air we breathe are all made of atoms and molecules. Chemistry is the study of atoms and molecules and how they interact and react.

Students will learn about atoms and molecules, elements, solutions, mixtures, chemical reactions, and matter. We will conduct experiments and complete projects to enhance the topics we are learning about including a Bubble Sock, a Chemical Volcano, and a solubility experiment.

We will spend the first part of each class learning about the chemistry topic of the day. We will complete a chemistry experiment or project in the second part of the class. We will learn about the scientific method and how to safely conduct scientific experiments.

Our schedule will be:
Week 1: Atoms & Molecules/ We will conduct a solubility experiment
Week 2: Elements and the Periodic Table / We will make a Bubble Sock / Periodic Table
Week 3: Compounds, Mixtures, & Solutions / We will do an experiment with solutions and mixtures
Week 4: Chemical Reactions / We will make a chemical volcano
Week 5: States of Matter/ We will make Oobleck

Safety Note:
- All experiments should be conducted in a well-ventilated area. Safety goggles or glasses are recommended. A table covering is recommended in case there are spills.
- STUDENTS MUST BE ABLE TO LISTEN AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS. If your student will have problems listening and following directions, please have an adult nearby to assist.
- Please have all of the supplies prepared and ready before each class.
- All experiments are safe - we use common household products - but is imperative all students LISTEN carefully while we are working on our experiments to maintain a safe classroom.

Supplies needed for each week:
Week 1: Skittles or hard candies of many colors, a small plate (saucer-sized), 1 cup of warm water
Week 2: You need the TOP PART of a plastic bottle (water or soda bottle with the BOTTOM CUT OFF - please have an adult do this BEFORE the class) & a sock or piece of cloth that can fit over the cut-off end of the bottle & a rubber band (that will fit around the bottle) & bubble solution ingredients - 1 cup warm water & 4 tablespoons liquid dish soap & 2 Tablespoons Corn Syrup & a bowl & a spoon for mixing / Periodic Table printout
Week 3: Five clear cups with 1 cup of water in each cup and 1/4 cup of each of the following: salt, sugar, oatmeal (or any other whole grain), cooking oil, & dish detergent PLUS 1/4 cup of extra dish detergent ALL in separate containers (Do NOT mix any of these items together), 5 plastic spoons
Week 4: 1 bowl & 1 non-metal cup or smaller bowl that will fit in the bigger bowl & 1 cup of vinegar & 1/4 cup of baking soda
Week 5: 1 plastic container (an old food storage container works well), 1 box of cornstarch, 1 cup of water, plastic spoon

Annette the Teacher has been teaching for a long time. She has over three decades of experience teaching children of all ages. She has a B.A. in Sociology with minors in Biology, Chemistry, and Writing from the University of Pittsburgh. She has homeschooled her own children from Pre-School through (their current) High School. All of her classes are interactive. Annette encourages students to fully participate in class. All of her classes feature hands-on activities and books Annette writes for the class herself.

Annette is a published writer, publisher, and artist. She uses her extensive knowledge and experience to create unique classes for every student. She enjoys teaching science, history, art, and cooking classes. She brings history alive with her "Big History ..." classes where students learn about key times in history and complete hands-on projects. "Paint like ... Famous Artists" art classes where students will learn about famous artists and create their own artwork based on the artists' works. "Smart Science" classes where we explore science and complete experiments and projects. Annette knows hands-on, interactive experiences are the best way for children to learn.
