It is a truth which should be universally acknowledged: Jane Austen is awesome!

Jane Austen's classic masterpiece 'Pride and Prejudice' offers a study of 18th Century conventions, prose and manners. This novel is a great introduction to Regency Literature.

This book study will read and discuss the book 'Pride and Prejudice' in a mixture of reading assignments and close reading during the class - we will use presentations and discussions for the majority of lessons. Learning aims will be to study the genre, literary era, tropes and motifs, literary devices, character analysis and themes in the novel. Writing activities will be started in class and completed as homework. Please have your text readily available during class for activities.

Week 1 - Background : In this lesson we will learn about Jane Austen, setting of the novel, the literary era and the 'comedy of manners' genre. We will read Chapters 1-3 together. Homework reading assignment Chapters 4-8.
Week 2 - Discussion and analysis of the reading homework assignment chapters and discuss themes and motifs. Homework reading assignment Chapters 9-16.
Week 3 - We will study the literary devices used in the text such as : allusion, foreshadowing, hyperboles, imagery and metaphors. Our activity is creating a character mind map.  Homework reading chapters 17-24.
Week 4 - Discussion and analysis of the reading homework chapters and character analysis using PEACE paragraphs. Homework reading chapters 25-32.
Week 5 - Reading together chapters 33-36 during class, with discussion and analysis. Homework reading chapters 37-44.
Week 6 -  Discussion and analysis of the reading homework chapters and discussion of themes in the novel. Homework reading assignment chapters 45-52
Week 7 - Discussion on Tone and Austen's criticism of social class structures. Reading together chapters 53-56 during class, with discussion and analysis. Homework reading chapters 57-61.
Week 8 - Discussion and analysis of the reading homework chapters and quiz on the entire novel.


**Pride and Prejudice is available online in the public domain, learners may access this for free they will need access to this or a copy for reading.
