Let's take a dive into a foundational unit in pre-algebra!

This class focuses heavily on the ability to connect information from problems to a formula. Learners are given an algebraic formula and must learn how to decode the variables, assess what information they have been given, insert the given information into the formulas, and solve for the missing piece.

CLASS NOTES will be posted 24 hours before class is set to start. Printing (or annotating the notes digitally) is strongly encouraged in order to be successful in this class.

My goals are to teach to the students' needs and encourage students while they learn these core concepts. I accomplish this through setting high expectations and making sure students feel seen and heard. Mistakes will be made, and that is okay! It is all part of the learning process.

The method of teaching will be a mix of "I do, we do, you do" (which means I will be demonstrating the content first) and giving the students problems to try out on their own first. I often use questions to allow students to think critically without giving the answers away. I love student-to-student interaction and will be incorporating it as much as possible through online discussions.

PRE-REQUISITE SKILLS: Knowing how to find the area & perimeter of common shapes, given a formula.

Class Schedule:
Week 1: Anatomy of a Circle, Circumference, and Area of a Circle
Learners are introduced to the radius and diameter of a circle. We then use this information to find the circumference and area of circles, semicircles, and quarter-circles. 

Week 2: Area of Composite Figures
We review calculating the area of rectangles, squares, parallelograms, trapezoids, triangles, semicircles, and quarter circles. Students are presented with composite shapes and must use their knowledge to solve the area of the irregular shape.

Week 3: Anatomy of Prisms and Pyramids
Learners compare the 3D shapes of prisms and pyramids. We will locate their bases, heights, and lengths and use this information alongside formulas for area and volume in the coming weeks.

Week 4: Area of Prisms and Pyramids
Total and lateral surface areas are covered this week. Learners will be given certain information and must use the given information and their formulas to solve complex problems.

Week 5: Volume of Prisms and Pyramids
We calculate the volume of different 3D shapes to wrap up this unit. Learners may be asked to find objects in their surroundings (such as a cereal box) and calculate the volume of such objects.
