Experiencia de clase

Nivel de inglés - A1
Grado de EE. UU. 2 - 5
Nivel Intermediate
1. What will be taught?

This class will teach vocabulary skills by exploring challenging and exciting words from classic children’s literature. Students will learn to understand, use, and remember new words to strengthen their reading comprehension.

2. What topics will you cover?

Key Vocabulary Words: Ten carefully selected vocabulary words from books like Charlotte’s Web, Alice in Wonderland, The Secret Garden, etc.
Strategies for Understanding New Words: Using context clues, breaking down words, and connecting meanings to known words.
Practical Use: How understanding these words can make reading more enjoyable and comprehension easier.

3. How is your class structured?

Intro (5 minutes): Brief class introduction and goals. Explain how these “power words” can make reading more interesting and easy.
Vocabulary Exploration (15 minutes): Introduce each word with a quick definition, context from the story, and a fun mini-activity. These are some examples:
Matching: Match words to their definitions.
Sentence Building: Use the word in a sentence, optionally pairing it with an illustration or small clip.
“Guess the Meaning” Game: A short sentence or phrase from a classic is read, and students guess the meaning.

Wrap-up Activity (5 minutes): Recap key words learned, invite students to share their favorite word, and challenge them to spot it in their next reading session.

4. How will you teach?

Interactive and Visual-Based: Use screen-sharing to present words, definitions, and simple, fun visuals (like characters from the classics).
Mini-Activities: Keep students engaged through short activities that encourage interaction, such as guessing games and sentence-building.

5. What’s your teaching style?

Engaging and Supportive: The focus is on making vocabulary exploration feel like an adventure, with encouragement for each student’s participation and responses.
Hands-on Learning: Using context clues and creating sentences encourages practical use, building both comprehension and confidence.
6. How much will learners get to interact with you?

High Interaction: The class is structured to let students interact through:
Games: Fun guessing games for vocabulary meanings.
Discussion: Sharing favorite words and exploring how each word changes the meaning in a sentence.
Direct Feedback: Every student’s contribution is acknowledged, and I offer positive reinforcement and guidance.

Metas de aprendizaje

Just like the title suggests I want to help students find those vocabulary words in their own reading books and learn how to find the meanings to them. Then I want them to connect to those words to help them improve their reading comphension skills.

Lista de útiles escolares
Your student is welcomed to bring their reading books if they come across a vocabulary word that they are struggling with. We can practice with them. It isn't necessary for class but optional.

I'll be using books from the public domain in children selections mostly. Any questions please let me know.

Hello! My name is Teacher Clarissa. Some like to call me Storybox Lady!

I help students of any reading level too:

@) Read a Story
@) Understand what they have just read (reading comprehension)
@) Connect to the Story in an emotional way

I use 10 tips for better Reading Comprehension and Understanding

1. Look at the story 2. Prior Knowledge 3. Vocabulary 4. Context Clues 5. Settings 6. Characters 7. Main Plot/Main Conflict 8. Summary/Notes 9. Pacing 10. Connection to the story

I have taught ESL for 5 years on many platforms, not just to Chinese children, but for children all over the world. My main experience comes from teaching and volunteering 20 plus years to children in church classes, my community, and Boy Scouts of America settings.

I've taught children to sing, to play, to think, and helped them develop skills in their lives so they could become better adults and better humans in their communities.

I believe a child has a right to be protected and heard. I will show respect to them and I hope for the same from them. I want to do my best to bring out the best in children and let them know they are wanted and validated. They have wisdom beyond their years and we as adults need to stop and listen to them. They see things we can't see.
I'm excited to get to know your child in my classroom. I may be simple in teaching without to many bells and whistles but I've got heart, kindness, patience and a fun sense of play and humor to my personality. See you in the classroom.
