"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I— I took the one less traveled by, And that has made all the difference." Those famous words by Robert Frost ask us all a question: When have you made a decision that changed the course of your life? In this two-part class, students will take a close look at two of Robert Frost's best-known poems, "The Road Less Traveled" and "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening," before completing a writing assignment based on his works. During the second class, we will examine more of Frost's poems, including "Nothing Gold Can Stay," "Acquainted with the Night," "Fire and Ice," and "The Pasture" to round out our understanding of Frost as both a man and as a poet. We will examine: *vocabulary and content *structure and form (stanza, meter, rhyme scheme) *poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, assonance, consonance, and repetition *viewpoint of the narrator *the life of Robert Frost Students are expected to read both poems before class. The poems are provided upon registration and should be printed out to use for reference during the class. After the first class, students will be asked to respond to, in writing and for submission to the instructor, a prompt based on "The Road Less Traveled." They are welcome to share their writing with the class, and instructor feedback will be provided following the conclusion of the class.

My passions are writing and poetry, and it's my great joy that my five kids can quote Shakespeare and Longfellow. So many students claim to "hate" poetry, but that's often because poetry is difficult to understand. My goal is to give students the tools they need to unlock poems. Like John Keats suddenly understanding Homer once he read the English translation, I want my students to look "...at each other with a wild surmise/ Silent, upon a peak in Darien."
