One hundred years ago, every schoolchild could quote "The Village Blacksmith" -- a fact that would have pleased Longfellow! Today, his poems endure as childhood classics -- but he offers much deeper thoughts than the simplicity we associate with his works. This one-time class will offer an examination of several of Longfellow's poems. We will also examine: *vocabulary and content *structure and form (stanza, meter, rhyme scheme) *poetic devices such as metaphor, simile, alliteration, assonance, consonance, and repetition *viewpoint of the narrator *the life of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow The class will conclude with a poetry prompt that students are welcome to complete at home and turn in to the instructor for feedback.

My passions are writing and poetry, and it's my great joy that my five kids can quote Shakespeare and Longfellow. So many students claim to "hate" poetry, but that's often because poetry is difficult to understand. My goal is to give students the tools they need to unlock poems. Like John Keats suddenly understanding Homer once he read the English translation, I want my students to look "...at each other with a wild surmise/ Silent, upon a peak in Darien."
