In this four week class, students will be introduced to a wide variety of poem styles. They will learn the structure of writing poems, they will learn that all poems do not rhyme.They will learn how to identify rhyming word patterns in poetry. Connecting this concept to patterns in math will be explained and shown. Students will receive guided instruction in reading, analyzing and writing their own poems. Each week, we will learn how to write three different types of poems. I recommend getting your child a notebook dedicated only for writing. You will want to keep their developmental writing masterpieces! 
Week 1 What is Poetry? We will have a class conversation to determine their background knowledge, interests, likes, exposure to poetry, etc. What do they already know? Each class will begin with a conversation about the poem styles for that day. Students will expand their vocabulary too! 
I will use an I do, we do, you do approach to teaching. We will also share our poems with each other.
Week 1 Fractured Nursery Rhyme, Free Verse, Acrostic
Week 2 Shape Poem, Counting syllables, Couplets
Week 3 Haiku, Senryu, Quatrain, Cinquain
Week 4 Lyrical poetry, odes, ballads
Each class will begin with me sharing a poem. We will examine and discuss the text structure.  I will model the writing process as we learn to recognize and write our own styles of poems. We will end class with a share it activity, followed by a class reflection.

A writing notebook or folder is recommended. I will post poems for weeks 2 and 3 in the learner classroom message/greeting as an attachment on the Sunday evening before class. Please print the poems as we will use them as part of the lessons. This class will be fun, engaging and provide a strong foundation in writing and understanding the elements of poetry.

Hi Parents! Thank you for your interest in my classes. I offer a wide variety of classes within the life skills, language arts, math, and science content areas. My most popular classes are private math tutoring, shoe tying, introduction to writing and a variety of creative arts classes. These classes are designed for students in elementary through grade 6. I have been a teacher for over thirty years. I have taught students from many cultures and backgrounds. I have taught all content subjects in every elementary grade as well as 6th grade Language Arts. I have taught students on line, in public, parochial, homebound, after school, and in enrichment settings. To date, I have taught over 8,000 virtual on-line classes! I am a licensed teacher, administrator, instructional coach, and also have my academically gifted certification. I earned my masters in school administration from UNC-Chapel Hill, and a highly-qualified bachelors in K-6 from Elon College/University. In addition, I have an associates degree in Early Childhood Education. How we learn and the stages we move through are always taken into account when creating and delivering instruction. In my classroom, I use a wide variety of instructional strategies and research based methodologies to meet the individual learning styles and interests of my students. I use inquiry based learning and believe students learn best when their learning styles and interests are part of the classroom experience. Relationships are an essential part of a students success both in and out of the classroom. Building strong relationships with my students is at the core of my instructional approach. I am a lifelong learner and want to inspire my love for learning with all of my students, in hopes they will be too. Teaching is my passion but in my spare time, I enjoy reading, gardening, embroidery, spending time outdoors and being on the water. I am happiest when playing with my eight year old grandson Alex and our adorable dog Gracie. I hope you will check out my catalog of classes.
