This is an ongoing course designed to critically analyze and discuss classic poetry. Age and national origin of the poems will vary, but all will be taught in the English Language. Poems will be read and discussed as a group. This will be a chance for students to expand on their critical thinking skills, and practice taking notes and speaking their ideas in front of a group.

I will read the poems aloud to the class. This will be followed by annotation on a second read-through. Students will learn to visualize through diction and structure. Questions on my part will be helpful in this, but the students will learn to come to their own conclusions about meaning (I might have my own assertions about a work, but everyone views a piece differently). Text-specific vocabulary will also be of great importance, in fact essential, to work with poetry (improving skills for how to take notes and literary analysis).

Week of 11/14: Wilfred Owen's Dulce Et Decorum Est; what makes this satire?

Week of 11/21: Alfred, Lord Tennyson's Charge of the Light Brigade; tie-in with the previous week for understanding, and its glimmering glory

Week of 11/28: Excerpt from The Illiad; digging deeper into the history of war. Imagery, honor, and glory.

Week of 12/5: Student pieces; how do the students wish to present a favorite of theirs?

As an English Teacher, I have worked with war poetry before. Primarily because the imagery is so much more vivid and visceral, and they show a certain evolution in the view on warfare: ranging from glorification to horror, especially as mankind has grown (even verses from the Old Testament of the Bible contain scenes of battle).
