Nivel Beginner - Intermediate
In this one time course, we will dive into the many different aspects of place value. We will look at whole numbers ranging from 0- 999,000,000,000. We will cover the following topics:
-Identifying place value
-Comparing numbers
-Writing numbers in expanded and standard forms
-Rounding numbers
-Finding missing digits that make the biggest and smallest numbers possible
-Addition and subtraction, including "carrying" and "borrowing"

The class will be structured as a combination of lecture, learners practicing the skills taught, asking questions, and discussions. For each topic, I will show examples and the reasons for the answers--HOW the math works. After each topic and examples, I will give the learners some problems to work. I will encourage them to share the answers. If they are not understanding the topic, I can try to explain a different method or try more problems. As I explain the topic, they are welcome to take notes. Learners are welcome to ask questions while I am explaining a topic and while they are working problems. My teaching style is demonstrator because my knowledge will be shown through my explanations and I encourage them to watch the explanations, then do some problems on their own (or guided with me if they need the support). Most of the time, my entire screen will be shared so the learners can see my whiteboard and a word document. This will allow them to have a visual of the place value chart while I am showing examples of each topic.

For this class, I highly recommend learners bring a whiteboard to do sample problems, along with paper or a notebook to take notes. After the class is over, I will post more practice problems to do on the class board. You are welcome to print those for your learner to practice. If parents would like a copy of the place value chart I created or any notes from the lesson, I will send it after class is over. The place value chart can be printed and used to practice after class. If you put it in a protective sleeve and use expo markers, your child can use it multiple times for practice. Another option is to use it on a word document.

I have taught my twins and children in public schools a variety of math skills. I have taught in multiple states and am aware of the state standards that schools require in different grades. My expertise and bachelor's degree in education qualifies me to teach math skills in language arts grades K-6th. My background with homeschooling my twins, who are now doing 7th grade work, and other homeschool students has allowed me to practice math skills on a daily basis. I have been my girls' only math teacher since 2nd grade, when we pulled them out of public school and started homeschooling.
