Pizza Fractions is a 3-week math camp designed for five or fewer students, designed to revisit in a fun and interactive way one of the most fundamental and useful concepts in mathematics: the idea of a ratio, in the form of fractions, decimal fractions, percentages, and probabilities. This camp starts with a visual representation of a fraction as slices of a whole - slices of pizza! Yum! Over and over, we will be turning fractions into representations of circular sections and other models, such as grids, number lines and other graphs. My students get a chance to have a sound review of this important topic and ask all the questions and inquiries they have; often, questions coming from the students themselves provide a better sense of understanding all the ideas we see in during sessions. The objective is to consolidate their knowledge of fractions, expand their understanding and application of the concept of a fraction and increase their agility in handling fractions, performing operations and modelling word problems with them. Prior knowledge of number operations (subtraction, addition, multiplication and division of numbers) is needed; class is most definitely fun and interactive! This multi-day camp meets two times a week for four weeks in total. Week 1: We delve with foundational knowledge about fractions; notation, proper and improper fractions; comparison of fractions and operations with fractions addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. These concepts are introduced graphically, using the analogy of a pizza and using other representations such as gatherings of objects, people, and the important model of a number line. Week 2: This second week is all about introducing the companion concepts of a decimal fraction (used in our numbering system) and percentages (which is yet another way to visualize proportions). I introduce my students to bar graphs and other tools available on different math and word processing software. Week 3: This third and last week leads to the crowning key of this camp, which is modelling with fractions! We work on word problems and an introduction to geometric ratios. Fractions are all over the place, even in our language! They are used in Algebra, Geometry, Calculus, Physics Economics, Biology; you name it! A lot of doodling happens during the class; I make sure to keep everything in order so that the screenshots of our sessions can be used as a reference to review and solve related exercises. Every weekend, I provide selected worksheets so that everyone can practice on their own and expand their knowledge about fractions.

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hi! I'm a mathematician and a classical and jazz pianist. I'm a bilingual math and music teacher; I've been teaching K-12 Math, teaching piano lessons and performing for more than ten years in the US, Canada, and México.
I'm a Fulbright scholar with a master's in jazz and a double major in mathematics and classical piano. I also love Computer Science and have been working for a Data Science company for two years now.
Everything is easy, and everyone can learn any ability or topic; it's a combination of practice, a clever approach, and some guidance along the way; that's what makes the learning equation magical!
It is also essential to understand every student's strengths and adapt, as a teacher and guide, to their needs and their way of understanding the world.
Perhaps one of the most important tools I use when solving a problem is to construct a simpler scenario and use that to understand the original problem; this way, everything seems a little bit easier to understand. Our ability to imagine a more straightforward scenario is one of the fundamental tools we can use in math and any other human activity - less is MORE!
The greatest advantage of having a tutor is that you'll have a guide along the way that has travelled through many of the places you are now travelling and can lead you along the way. The idea is to walk together, have fun and improve our math skills!
I've always taken this approach with my students, and it all works out better than we expect in the end!
