This class is for beginners/early beginners ages 6-10! It uses the amazing Wunderkeys Primer Book 2 (see the link under Supplies to purchase it on Amazon). If your child hasn't completed the Wunderkeys Primer Book 1 class, they can still enroll in this course if they can play songs in middle C position. (Please contact me with any questions or if you'd like an initial private lesson to evaluate which class is best for your child). Why did I switch to the Wunderkeys piano series for beginners? The biggest reason is because of their scaffolding approach! That's a fancy way of saying that new concepts are introduced in the proper order and students are given time to master them before moving on. A lot of piano methods introduce several new hand positions within just the first book - Wunderkeys ensures that students KNOW their notes before adding new ones. By the end of this class students will be able to: * play songs in middle C position easily * play songs in "regular" C position * sightread steps/skips on the staff * incorporate dynamics (piano, forte, mezzo piano, mezzo forte) into their playing * figure out "where to put their hands" by themselves before playing a song! The Wunderkeys Primer series is also FUN. Each lesson contains a game, clapping rhythm, real songs to practice, and extra activities that can be completed at home. This series is interactive, students don't just sit and listen. They are involved in learning the songs, drawing, clapping, practicing, and playing games. In this book students will gradually learn how to read rhythmic notation, use correct piano posture and hand shape, use the musical alphabet, identify notes for the right and left hands, play songs, and start ear training. There are 3 books in the Wunderkeys Primer series, each book takes 10 lessons to complete. The Book 3 class will be offered once this class is over. To learn more about the Wunderkeys Primer series, please visit this website to see inside the book and gain more information: https://wunderkeys.com/piano-book/wunderkeys-primer-piano-book-two/ Week 1 - Highline Hangout Week 2 - Cool Cousins Week 3 - Surf's Up Skunk Week 4 - Gobble Up the Garden Week 5 - Bedtime Brouhaha Week 6 - Friends in Flight Week 7 - Rooftop Pop week 8 - Rabbit Rancher Week 9 - Soccer Ball Storm Week 10 - Catch up Week (finish any needed lessons, review concepts, possibly play for each other).
Metas de aprendizaje
I want students to be able to play in both middle and regular C position on the piano. I would also like for them to be able to figure out the hand position independently. Most of all, I want them to enjoy music!

Experiencia y certificaciones del docente
Hello! My name is Julie Schmidt and I have 16 years of experience teaching individual and group piano lessons. Also, I have been playing and studying the piano for 35 years while earning a MS in Education. Music is definitely my passion. My favorite part of teaching the piano is finding out what kind of music motivates my students. Some of my students like reading the notes on the staff, playing classical music, and not straying far from the printed notes. Other students play more by ear and love to improvise! I always have a few students who want to be able to play songs quickly - I teach them chords and leadsheets so they can progress faster. I like to tailor my lessons to get a student excited about playing the piano. I use a variety of books, digital music, and resources to keep my lessons new and motivate my students to practice.
I have a laid-back teaching style and love to have fun during lessons. We will play games, improvise, compose, learn chords, and study different musical periods and composers. I really enjoy it when students bring their own music to lessons because I know that they are motivated to learn it!
Along with piano I have also earned a degree in Dietetics, owned a baking business, homeschooled my 3 children for a few years, taught in the public school, and taught Sunday School to middle schoolers. Luckily I did not do all of these things at the same time! I love reading, baking, line dancing, and attending concerts.
