Experiencia de clase

In this beginner piano camp, students will learn the basics of the piano as well a play a simple song and create their own music.

In this introductory course, students will learn to play their keyboard as I play mine.

Students will:
- Gain an understanding of the keyboard
- Explore correct piano posture and hand shape
- Practice playing with correct piano fingering
- Learn the musical alphabet
- Play music that is appropriate for small hands
- Identify and play piano and forte dynamics
- Basic improvisation will be taught through rhymes and sayings
- Be able to play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" a C pentatonic scale, and a C major chord, and how to improvise their own song

I believe it is important for students to have early success at making music, therefore I provide and encouraging and positive classroom environment. It's my job to help my student's believe in themselves, and to show them how much fun making music truly is.

Students will learn through playing the piano, reading music, lecture, games, slides, and discussion.

There is no prior knowledge necessary. This is a beginner camp for learning the piano.

Students or parents are encouraged to message me throughout the week if they have any questions. Students will need to practice their piano and assignments between meetings. This camp is for fun and for a challenge. It's perfect for students to get a grasp of if they want to continue their study of the piano.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will be able to play a simple melody on the piano, demonstrate proper technique, and improvise a song.

Day 1: Explore on their keyboards, learn and identify "finger numbers", explore high and low sounds, and be introduced to the C pentatonic scale, and explore finger numbers on the white keys. The musical alphabet is introduced.

Day 2: Students are introduced to the first part of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star. I will upload music for them to practice. All material taught on the previous day will be reviewed. Students will play the C pentatonic scale individually. A spoken rhyme is introduced to students (this will be used for the improvisation part of this camp)

Day 3: Twinkle Twinkle Little Star is reviewed, and I will listen to each student play this. Individualized feedback is given. The rhyme from the previous lesson is reviewed. Students are given the final half of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Day 4: Students will play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star individually. I will point out areas that still need improvement, or if none is needed. Basic improvisation skills are taught, and students begin to explore their own melodies on the piano! The rhyme is put to music notes.

Day 5: The C major chord is introduced. Each student will explore playing the C major chord on their pianos. Students (if they so choose) will play Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, The C major chord, the C pentatonic scale, and improvise for the group. We will have a mini celebration for each student, and I will allow time for questions/social interaction. Each student will be presented a certificate that can be printed for completion of this course.

Lista de útiles escolares
Students need their own keyboard. It would be helpful if their keyboard was marked with the musical alphabet through placing stickers on the keys before the first lesson. This is not needed, it would just provide the best outcome for the students, since this is a crash course. Parents may do a quick google search to find where the musical alphabet is placed on the keys. Ideally, you would have 8 stickers on seven keys, marked C D E F G A B C.

It also helps if your child's piano/keys are visible to me from their screen.

Hi there! My name is Leah Hughes and I love working with children and teaching music!

I currently hold and active professional teaching license in the state of Tennessee. I have been a public school elementary music teacher for 7 years. The school I taught at was a rural and low income school, with 100% of the students receiving free lunch. I have had the opportunity to teach many different types of learners!

I am currently a music teacher for a Montessori school, where I teach infants - 6th graders.

One fun fact about me is that I was once an au pair for a little 4 year old girl in France! My job was to teach her English. It was quite a rewarding experience. I love to incorporate foreign language as well as many cultural backgrounds in my classroom.

I believe music for children should be fun, empowering, and therapeutic.

I believe in order for a child to be successful in music, they have to believe in themselves. And that is where an excellent teacher comes in. It's my job to make your child feel like they can succeed. I will encourage, encourage, and encourage your child with any and every success they make inside my classroom.

I am NOT a professional musician. I didn't study at Juliard, and I certainly haven't performed at Carnegie Hall. I don't have a fancy resume full of all the places I have performed at. But I have stories and stories of children past, present, and (future!) who have and will touch my heart.

I AM a teacher first, and then a musician at heart.

I can't wait to teach your child.
