What will be taught:
This class is perfect for an emergent reader who is just beginning their reading journey. We will read simple sentences such as "Pop got on the mat". This is a great pre-reading course as well for kids who are still mastering letter sounds.
In this ongoing group class, we will focus on phonemic awareness skills in a fun and engaging way. By the end of each class, the students will read a short, decodable book together as a class.

What phonemic awareness topics will we cover:
- phonemes
- rhyme
- syllables
- segmenting words into phonemes
- isolating phonemes
- decoding words by blending
- onset-rime blending and segmenting
- sight word practice

Class structure:
I keep my class sizes small because I want everyone to feel comfortable participating without having to mute unless there is background noise or disruptions. We will start by reviewing phonemes using hand motions to improve memory. We will listen to words and practice identifying the individual phonemes in the word. We will listen for rhyming words. We will clap the syllables in a word. We will play with words by adding, deleting, or substituting sounds to make new words. We will then practice sight words by looking at both the pronunciation and meaning. Finally, we will put our skills to the test by reading a short story together with help from the teacher!

My teaching style:
I use the Science of Reading approach. I follow the Orton-Gillingham method of teaching reading. I will be using colorful and playful animations on-screen to guide the students through the activities. I believe students learn even quicker while using their hands, so they can follow along with my hand movements.

Learner interaction:
I will give each student a chance to answer individually along the way. Students can share their own creative sentences using our new sight words. When reading the story, we will read together as I model for the students how to sound out words. I will check for comprehension along the way and at the end. I will leave time at the end of class for a few minutes of learner-to-learner interaction.

Required knowledge:
Understanding of alphabet letters.

Cancellation policy:
I follow Outschool's standard cancellation and refund policy:
