Course Format: Each week includes: A short video introduction (students watch the video explaining the task for the week). Phonics challenges (interactive worksheets and activities). Submission of completed tasks for feedback (students will submit answers to puzzles and activities). Week 1 Focus: Letter-sound recognition, beginning sounds, and sound matching. Worksheet 2: Fill in the Missing Letter Complete the words by filling in the missing letter. Example: _at (Answer: cat, bat, hat). Submit: After completing the worksheets, submit the answers in the class discussion or email for feedback. Worksheet Example: Match the letters to the pictures. Fill in the missing letter: _at (cat, bat, hat). Week 2 Focus: Word families, rhyming words, and decoding. Learning Goals: Identify and group words that belong to the same word family. Practice identifying rhyming words. Decode simple words by recognizing word families. Learning Goals: Practice blending sounds to form simple words. Decode segmented words to form meaningful words. Develop the skill of segmenting and blending phonemes to read. Activities: Watch the Introduction Video: The Phonics Professor explains the task of decoding the secret message by blending sounds. Worksheet 1: Blend the Sounds Listen to segmented sounds (e.g., /c/ /a/ /t/) and blend them to form words (cat). Worksheet 2: Decode the Word Decode segmented words and write the correct word. Example: /d/ /o/ /g/ = dog. Submit: Submit the decoded words and blending activity for feedback. Worksheet Example: Blend the following sounds: /b/ /a/ /t/ = _______. Decode the word: /p/ /i/ /n/ = _______. Week 4 Focus: Review of letter sounds, word families, and blending. Learning Goals: Review and reinforce phonics skills learned in previous weeks. Solve a final puzzle using a mix of letter-sound recognition, word families, and blending. Decode the final secret word to unlock the treasure chest. Activities: Watch the Final Video: The Phonics Professor explains the final puzzle and the need to use all the skills learned to unlock the treasure chest. Worksheet 1: Word Family Matching Match words to the correct word families. Example: cat → __ (Answer: -at family). Worksheet 2: Decode the Word Decode the segmented words and write the correct word. I have had the opportunity to work with children in a variety of educational settings, including a phonics-based escape room activity that I have facilitated. This engaging and interactive experience helps students build their phonics skills while solving puzzles and challenges. I have implemented this escape room activity with young children, particularly in kindergarten and early elementary grades, to reinforce letter sounds, word recognition, and phonemic awareness in a fun, hands-on environment.
My training includes coursework and professional development focused on early literacy and phonics instruction. I have worked with children for several years, both in the classroom and through extracurricular activities like this escape room. In these settings, I have gained valuable experience in fostering a love of learning and encouraging problem-solving skills while reinforcing foundational reading concepts.
The phonics escape room provides an opportunity for students to practice their phonics skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment, and I find it to be an effective way to engage students in active learning. I have facilitated these activities in various classroom settings and have seen positive outcomes in students' ability to apply phonics knowledge in their reading and writing.
