Does your learner want to teach their dog fun tricks in order to apply for the AKC Novice Trick Training Title? Maybe, your learner just wants to have fun teaching their old dog new tricks? In this exciting 5-week class, children will learn how to instruct their dog to do various tricks. Tricks will include paw, shake a paw, high five, roll over, play dead, paws up, get in and stay in a box, spin and twirl, crawl like a snake or ring a bell. Teacher will model the trick using a demonstration dog. Students will take turns practicing the trick with their dog. Every week, we will learn two tricks. Teacher will model the tricks using a demonstration dog. Then the students will practice the tricks with their dogs. Basic commands such as "Sit" and "Down" will be taught if needed in order to prepare for tricks. Each following week, we will review the tricks. Feedback and help will be given if the student is having difficulties. Teacher will give information about applying for the AKC Notice Trick title as this will have to be done separately from Outschool. Information is available about applying for Novice Trick Title on the AKC website. Learners can use treats to lure the tricks in The AKC Novice Trick Title, but teacher will be training learners how to fade the treat prompts from the dogs so they may be able to do the tricks treat free. Week 1: Introduction to Trick Training - Discuss AKC Title - Commands: "Sit" - Tricks: "Paw" and Shake a Paw" Week 2: Review "Paw and Shake a Paw" - Tricks: "High Five" and "Spin and Twirl" Week 3: Review "High Five and Spin and Twirl" - Commands: "Down" Tricks: "Play Dead" and "Roll Over" Week 4: Review "Play Dead" and "Roll Over" - Tricks: "Crawl like a Snake" and "Paws up" Week 5: Review "Crawl like a Snake" and "Paws Up" - Tricks: "Get in a Box" and "Stay in a Box; and optional tricks such as sit, down or fetch

Students will learn how to teach their dog how to do various tricks using treats and positive reinforcement. If a clicker is available, the learner may use it in the training also. This class will prepare them and their dog to take the American Kennel Club (AKC) Novice Trick Title. Commands such as sit and down may be taught in order to teach the tricks.

Dogs are unpredictable and may take longer to learn commands or tricks than expected. Some dogs may not be able to do certain tricks due to age or size. Space is needed to train dogs and not all dogs will be able to do every trick.

Students will need a dog, leash, treats, clicker. Bell, hula hoop platform, or box lid and boxes will be needed to perform tricks. Dogs should be able to sit and it is recommended that puppies are at least 5 months old.

Teacher is a Certified Dog Trainer (CDT-C), AKC Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Evaluator. Her dog Roxy holds the AKC Title of Notice Trick Training. An important note is that not all dogs can learn tricks at the same pace and some tricks are not recommended for older or arthritic dogs. Also, some breeds can learn tricks faster and easier than others.
