Grado de EE. UU. 9 - 12
In this class, students will analyze the fairy tale "The Nightingale and the Rose" by Oscar Wilde. Students will be asked to read the story prior to class. We, as a class, will discuss the characterization, plot, and meaning of the story. We will also discuss the history of the author and apply his life to the story. We will also talk about the fact that this story was originally intended to be read by and shared with children. We will share opinions about this fact. While we discuss this critical analysis of the story, students will create a work of art to reflect their understanding of "The Nightingale and the Rose." Students can bring any art supplies to class to create their work of art. For example, they can bring paints and canvas to paint, markers or pencils and paper to draw or sketch, clay to sculpt, or even paper on which to write a poem or thoughts about the story. The only limit is the students' imagination. At the end of class, students will share their art and discuss their creations. This class will be taught through discussion with the teacher and other students. I will have a PowerPoint presentation to assist with the discussion. I believe students should have a chance to talk through their own ideas about literature to gain a greater understanding of interpretation and meaning of the literary piece. Students will be asked open-ended questions about the story and will take turns sharing their opinions. Such sharing will be facilitated by the teacher.
Metas de aprendizaje
Students will learn to explore, analyze, and value classic literature pieces. They will learn to express their own critiques verbally and creatively.

Orientación para padres
In "The Nightingale and the Rose," the main character, a nightingale, sacrifices her life blood for another. The recipient of the benefits of her sacrifice ignores her sacrifice and treats it as worthless. It may be disturbing to some readers.
We will discuss in our critical analysis the life of Oscar Wilde. We will discuss his relationship with Lord Alfred Douglas, which led to his imprisonment for what was then considered gross indecency. We will discuss that Oscar Wilde was never allowed to again see his sons, who were the first people to hear this story.
