This class offers a fun way to learn about the Oregon Trail, through a teacher-created simulation. Students will "begin" in Independence, Missouri, as part of a caravan headed west. As their leader, I will provide information along the way, and show pictures of the natural geography that they would have seen (if actually traveling on the trail). Along the way, students will be asked to "roll the dice" to determine results- such as a broken wheel, loss of family member (due to common causes during that time), or fortunate event. By the time we "arrive" in Willamette Valley, students will have an understanding of the experiences real settlers endured to reach their westward dreamland. This will be teacher-led, but participation from students is encouraged, and the simulation will be game-like and fun. Learners do not need to have any prior experience. Differentiation is included to also provide challenge to learners who are advanced/gifted. Students are encouraged to share their experiences during our "journey" and to ask questions, if needed. A positive class culture is a must, so I prefer learners to take turns when participating and to treat each other respectfully. *Please note- depending on the number of participants, this class can run over on time. I try my best to keep it as close to 50 minutes as possible, but I also do not want to stifle genuine interest or participation.
Metas de aprendizaje
-Students can describe struggles that were common for people traveling along the Oregon trail.
-Students can locate natural geographic sites that were destination points along the Oregon trail.

Lista de útiles escolares
A optional student guide will be provided for learners who enroll, with the locations we will "visit" along the way. It is an optional resource that can be printed to take notes on. If the learner is not using the handout, a piece of paper and something to write with will suffice. Learners should also have a 6 sided dice or use a digital one.
