This class continues where we left off at the end of Part 1 of Ōra Maritima, a story in Latin about a school boy who is visiting his aunt during the holidays in 1899. His aunt lives in a sea-side cottage on the southeast coast of England. He talks about his holidays, the seaside and countryside, and his activities as he visits ancient British sites and learns about the ancient Britons and the Roman occupation of Britain. EA Sonnenschein was a professor of Latin and Greek in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He thought there should be a Latin text book for young kids that a) was based on an interesting story and b) struck the right balance between memorising a lot of paradigms and actually *using* what you're learning to read and write interesting Latin. He couldn't find such a book, so he wrote one. (Two of them, in fact - there's a sequel!) This class meets twice a week. Each week, we'll begin by learning the vocabulary and grammar we'll need for reading that week's section of the story, using Nearpod activities and/or Kahoot quizzes. There will be time to practice new material and ask questions. There will always be homework to do between classes - plan to spend about 30 minutes a day doing some kind of homework for this class. You'll need to read at least some of the text every day (everything you've read so far, so you should understand it in Latin), and memorise and practice the new vocabulary and any new grammar concepts or paradigms. I'll post activities and/or quizzes using Nearpod, Kahoot, or Google forms several times per week. There may also be exercises or activities to complete outside of class (such as making a google slide or poster including text in Latin to practice the vocabulary and sentence structures we're learning that week). We'll work together in class to read and understand the Latin passage. We'll discuss some points of grammar and work on extra exercises to increase fluency and accuracy in reading, speaking, writing, and listening. We will practice some sample dialogues, and as we progress, we'll try to form our own sentences following the patterns of the structures we're learning each week. There will be an element of parsing (grammatical analysis) and translation as preparation for reading and enjoying the story in Latin and to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary we're learning and using. Each part of this class will be 8 weeks long. In Part 2, we will probably take about 2 weeks on each paragraph, making sure we're comfortable with reading and using the grammar and vocabulary. We'll use Nearpod and Kahoot games and also quizzes and assignments using Google forms to practice the material and gain fluency. Weeks 1 & 2: Second declension -us nouns (singular). Weeks 3 & 4: Second declension -us nouns (plural); conversation practice with dative. Weeks 5 & 6: Second declension -er and -um nouns, talking about where things are, where people live, predicate adjectives. Weeks 7 & 8: Continuing to use all previously learned grammar. We'll be reading, writing and talking about more family members, gardens and what we see and do in them, things you see in the countryside (animals, farms, estates...), cities, archaeology, archaeological sites, monuments/buildings, and artefacts, and some landscape/coastal descriptions. The prerequisite for this class is Ora Maritima Part 1.

We'll continue to use the book provided in Part 1 - it's best to print the material we're currently working on, or possibly buy a physical copy of the book.

Archaeologists study geology, math, biology, chemistry, physics, materials science, ecology, zoology, anthropology, ancient and modern languages, history, sociology, geography… Everything! Archaeology applies tools and knowledge from almost every subject in order to understand more about the lives of people in the past.
I enjoy teaching classes about different sorts of analysis and interpretation archaeologists do, like chemical analysis of teeth, bones and artifacts. I also think Latin is a lot of fun, and I've really enjoyed teaching Latin classes on Outschool using a variety of old textbooks from the late 1800s and early 1900s aimed at young kids. I studied Latin for three years in high school and again during my MA, but I like the vintage textbooks loads more!
I have a BSc in archaeological science, an interdisciplinary MA in medieval and Renaissance history and culture, and a PhD in archaeology, in which I combined historical research with strontium isotope ratio analysis of human dental enamel to answer questions about origins and mobility of a cemetery population. I’ve imaged and analysed archaeological, museum, and art objects using a scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive spectroscopy, x-ray fluorescence spectrometry, and Raman spectroscopy. I have a Celta certificate (teaching English to speakers of other languages), and I’ve taught kids ESL online for over four years. I homeschooled my daughter. For homeschooling, I was pedagogically all over the map, from unschooling to hardcore (old-style) Saxon math (complete with copious student tears. I regret nothing, and have since been thanked by said student.).
I use different approaches in different classes. Some classes focus on mastery of facts or skills. Other classes are more exploratory and focus on discussion, discovery, and articulating our thoughts and ideas. For older learners, I like to encourage collaborative work.
I live on a boat with a very nice cat.
Please feel free to send me a message with any questions, or request a time for an office hour appointment (Latin Office Hour/Assessment).
